On December 30, 2009, pound-for-pound boxing champion Manny Pacquiao filed a lawsuit in Nevada federal court against Floyd Mayweather, Jr., Floyd Mayweather, Sr., Roger Mayweather, Mayweather Promotions, LLC, and Golden Boy Promotions executives Oscar de la Hoya, and Richard Schaefer for making false and defamatory statements accusing Pacquiao of taking performance-enhancing drugs. The complaint is attached.

The lawsuit claims the Mayweathers, de la Hoya, and Schaefer knew that Pacquiao has never taken performance-enhancing drugs, knew their statements were false, but made them anyway out of "ill-will, spite, malice, revenge, and envy."

Pacquiao has retained Daniel Petrocelli of the Los Angeles-based law firm of O'Melveny & Myers LLP. About the filing of the complaint, Petrocelli stated: "Manny Pacquiao's achievements come from God-given talent and an indefatigable work ethic -- not steroids. He cannot and will not allow others to deliberately misrepresent his years of hard work and tarnish his reputation."

The lawsuit was filed in federal district court in Las Vegas, Nevada, and seeks compensatory and punitive damages for defendants' wrongful conduct.

Samoan-based Ghanaian Joseph Kwadjo (12-1, 8 KOs) is the new Universal Boxing Organization Intercontinental super middleweight champion. On Saturday December 19, at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, Fiji, Kwadjo scored a unanimous decision victory over local favourite Zulfikar Joy Ali.

Scores were: 118-114 (Jeremaia Ledua), 118-111 (Laurie Glozier) and 115-113 (Steve Miles).

"I'm happy that I've managed to win this fight and now I want to bring the world title fight to Fiji," Kwadjo said after the fight to the Fiji Times, and threw out a challenge towards UBO world champion Kali Jacobus.

Friday night when Fernando Guerrero, Shawn Porter and Lanard Lane all remained undefeated with impressive knockouts, each in less than four rounds.

Guerrero, of Salisbury, Md. – by way of the Dominican Republic – took down Jessie Nicklow (19-2-2, 7 KOs) of Baltimore in a four-round middleweight bout; Porter, of Akron, Ohio, bested Jamar Patterson (8-1, 8 KOs), of Utica, N.Y., in their jr. middleweight fight, also in four rounds; and in the night’s opening welterweight bout, Lane (10-0, 7 KOs) took down Said El Harrak (8-1, 3 KOs) of Henderson, Nev. – by way of England – in just two rounds.

In the main event, Guerrero and Nicklow were touted as cross-town rivals – the Baltimore fighters had fought each other five times as amateurs, Guerrero holding the edge, 3-2. Guerrero, however, quickly put any notion of a rivalry to rest. In the second round, the charismatic Dominican transplant landed multiple solid punches that had slowed down “The Beast” Nicklow and put him back on his heels.

“I knew I had him as soon as the third round, when he started moving for no reason,” Guerrero said. “He wasn’t giving me those quick movements, so I knew I had hurt him with a punch. That’s when I knew that I had to go for the attack.”

Attack he did. In the fourth round, Guerrero knocked Nicklow down, and as soon as he was back up, slugged away again. Punch drunk but staying with it until the referee called it at 2 minutes, 9 seconds, Nicklow proved true to his nickname.

Before last night's battle against Jean Marc Mormeck, Vinny Maddalone had promised to turn in an exciting and entertaining performance. After eight hard fought rounds not many people could argue against his statement.

Maddalone took the fight straight to the former two-time cruiserweight champion. The fight, which took place at the Halle Carpentier in Mormeck's native Paris, France, had the packed house in attendance on the edge of their seats for the majority of the contest.
In the end Mormeck was the winner on the judges score cards, winning by scores of 77- 75, 79-75, 79-73, but the warrior Maddalone, won over many of the fans. With the victory Mormeck improved to 34-4, 22KO while Maddalone drops to 32-6, 23KO.

Two fighters from Mecklenburg return to their boxing roots. The “Universum Champions Night“ comes to the Sport and Kongresshalle in Schwerin on December 19 with a world title twin bill featuring the two hometown world champions.

In the center of attention is the fight of the newly crowned WBO light heavyweight world champion Jürgen Brähmer (34-2, 28 KOs), who will defend his belt for the first time which he claimed in August against stable mate Aleksy Kuziemski. Brähmer's opponent in his first title defence is the unbeaten Russian Dmitry Sukhotsky (14-0, 9 KOs).Sebastian Zbik, who won the WBC Interim middleweight world title in July, Zbik will take on unbeaten Emanuele Della Rosa (22-0, 7 KOs) from Rome, Italy.

For both champions it is a fight in their hometown and therefore a very special challenge. Jürgen Brähmer moved from Stralsund to Schwerin at the age of 15 and was trained from then on by Michael Timm. Westminster, MD – In front of 2,500 boisterous fans at the Shipley Arena, Mark “TNT” Tucker retained his USBO Light Heavyweight championship Friday night with a hard fought ten round unanimous decision over wily veteran George “El Gallo” Armenta of Silver Spring, MD.

With a group of US Marines leading his loudly cheered ring walk, Tucker controlled the opening two frames by ripping Armenta with hard jab-straight left hand combinations. The hard charging Armenta had some success in the middle rounds with short right hands, but with the guidance of special assistant trainer Buddy McGirt, Tucker shook off a few rough moments to box effectively.

Armenta continued applying pressure in the late rounds with hopes of a one punch knockout, but the gutsy Tucker used an arsenal of heavy body punches along with straight left hands to the head while battling through a reoccurring in-fight hand injury to secure the victory.

Judge Gary Camponeschi scored the contest 98-92, while John Gradowski and Don Risher both had it 96-94 for Tucker, who also prevailed on scorecards of ringside media outlets.

“It was a great fight, he kept coming and was very tough”, said Tucker, who hails from nearby Eldersburg. “I got hit with a few punches I shouldn’t have, so I had to make adjustments to take charge and pull out the fight.”

Tucker improves to 13-0 with 7 KO’s, while the game Armenta falls to 13-5 (11 KO’s). Tucker’s next bout is tentatively scheduled for March 27 in Newark , NJ .

Huck Defends WBO Cruiserweight Title

Marco “Captain” Huck (27-1, 20 KOs) celebrated a successful first defence of his WBO Cruiserweight Title when he clinched a unanimous points victory over Ola Afolabi (14-2, 6 KOs). The 25-year-old German used his explosiveness and punching power to keep his opponent at bay. He was ahead 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 on the judges´ scorecards. “I am happy about my performance,” Huck said. “It was a tough fight against a very awkward opponent who moved a lot and was difficult to hit. I am delighted to have defended my title and now look forward to a great and relaxing Christmas time.”

Huck was the aggressor from the first bell on as he constantly attacked Afolabi with his trademark assaults. He landed strong combinations in almost every round. The fifth round was Afolabi´s best, with an uppercut briefly wobbling the champion following a clash of heads. “I should have knocked him out,” Afolabi said. “But Huck is a great warrior and a great fighter. It was a very close fight and I thought I won, but there are a few things I could have done better.”

Huck´s coach Ulli Wegner liked what he saw. “Marco did very well. His style does not match well with Afolabi´s so we had to work hard in practice to implement a proper game plan. Marco fought a great fight and he did not allow himself to be provoked by Afolabi´s antics. I am pleased with his performance.” And manager Wilfried Sauerland added: “It was a great year for Marco. He is just 25 years old and already world champion despite making only very few amateur fights. Marco has matured as a fighter and as a person and he once again showed that in the ring against a tough opponent.”

In the co-featured main event Russian heavyweight star Alexander Povetkin (18-0, 13 KOs) celebrated a successful first fight under star coach Teddy Atlas, knocking out Leo Nolan (27-2, 10 KOs) in the third round. Povetkin dominated the entire fight and dusted his opponent in the third after a flurry of punches. A strong left hook then sent Nolan down again for the referee to count him out. “I am very pleased with Alexander´s performance,” Atlas lauded. “He did what he had to do and knocked out and opponent that has never been knocked out before. Alexander is very talented and we will keep working hard to make him world champion soon. He will be ready when he gets the chance to fight for the title.”

Povetkin said it was good to be back in the ring after an eight-month break. “It felt good to box again,” he stated. “I have learned a lot of things from Teddy Atlas and it has been great to work with him. This was a good test for me. I will keep working hard in practice and wait for Wladimir Klitschko to fight me.”

Kalle Sauerland believes that Povetkin is “more than ready” for the showdown with the IBF/WBO champion. “This was another great win for Alexander,” he said. “He looked very impressive. The training with Teddy Atlas has paid off. We will fight Klitschko at any time, but it looks as if he prefers to make his WBO mandatory defence sagainst Eddie Chambers first. In two contrasting fights, “Kid” Carson Jones dealt Tyrone “The One” Brunson the first loss of his career in the main event while former WBO junior lightweight world champion Mike Anchondo won an eight-round split decision over previously undefeated Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera in the co-feature on an exciting night of fights on ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME® Friday before a capacity crowd at the Chumash Casino Resort.

Referee Dr. James Jenkin stepped in between a barrage of punches by Jones (24-7-1, 15 KOs) against a defenseless Brunson (21-1-1, 20 KOs ) at 2:39 in the third round, exposing the heralded Philadelphian for the first time in his young career and giving Jones the TKO.

“I’m a good fighter,” said the Oklahoma City , Okla. , resident Jones. “Everybody thinks that just because I have seven losses that I’m just coming in as an opponent. But that’s not me. I have seven losses because I had bad management but now that I have a great manager and promoter who are able to take care of me.

“I thought they stopped the fight too late,” he continued. “Man, I was throwing punches forever. I threw 100 punches and they still didn’t stop it. They should have stopped it earlier.”

Jones started the third round looking like he knew exactly what he had to do. He circled around and proceeded to land a right hand followed by a left hook that dropped Brunson to the canvas midway through the third round for the first time in his career. Up by the count of four, Brunson got back to his feet but was never able to counter Jones’ aggressive, attacking style. Brunson refused to speak with the media after the fight. He holds the world record for most consecutive first-round knockouts at 19.

SHOWTIME analyst Steve Farhood liked what he saw in Jones. “Carson Jones did the right thing in that he saw a weakness in Brunson and that weakness was how low he brought back the left jab,” he said. “He took advantage of the low left hand and from that point on it was Brunson not doing what he had to do as a fighter. He was exposed. He didn’t respond well. He didn’t do one of the two things you have to do in that situation: You hold or you punch back. And he did neither.”

Farhood said the night’s first televised fight was in direct contrast to the main event pitting two fighters who may not be the most talented guys, but are pure fighters. And he admitted on air that he felt the wrong guy won the eight-round super lightweight match.

“I scored the fight and I thought Herrera won by two points,” said Farhood, who said fellow analyst Antonio Tarver agreed with him. The way the three judges saw it was 77-75, 77-75 Anchondo, 79-73 Herrera.

“He’s a tough fighter,” said Anchondo (30-2, 19 KOs) of La Puente , Calif. “He came to fight. I believe I did enough in the first half to win the fight. I thought I did enough to not get a split decision but it is what it is.”

Said Herrera of Riverside, Calif., who falls to 13-1 (6 KOs ): “I’m shocked. I thought I won the fight. I thought the first two or three rounds were close but I won the rest. He had those two shots in the last round and that was it. I thought I had it in the bag. I thought I was home free. I’m just in complete shock. Rematch? Why should I give him a rematch? I clearly won the fight. The fans saw it and everyone at home saw it. What can you do?”

BRADLEY: “I just want to fight the best fighters in the world. That’s pretty much it. I’ve told my promoters that I want to fight the best fighters in the world. Will I ever get a chance to fight Manny Pacquiao fight, probably not? Those guys are mega-fighters. I just want to fight the best. Anybody that’s in my weight class who’s considered the best, that’s who I want to fight. I’ve had it in my heart for a long time that I wanted to fight these guys (Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather), but I’ve let that go. I’ll just fight whoever they give me.”

What does it mean to you to have Lamont to fight for a world title?

BARRY HUNTER (Lamont’s Trainer): “The day Lamont stepped into the gym we’ve been gearing up for this day to fight for a world title. When you look at two young people like Anthony and Lamont that went from what they went from at such an early age, to actually come from that a win a world title would be just huge. It would send a message clear across the map that if you don’t like where you are and where you are is a bad place you can do something about it. You don’t have to always stay there.”

You’re taking on a tough champion for your title shot. Does that concern you?

PETERSON: “It’s OK with me. I wouldn’t have it any other way. A lot of guys fight someone they know they can beat. But, with me it’s about fighting the best. If a fight comes up, you take it. It’s also a good thing for me because I don’t have to go through the other guys. I’m fighting the No. 1 at 140 pounds. If I can jump over the other guys then that will be good for me.”

Last night at the Manhattan Center, Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing presented its premiere installment of "Hustler Boxing" with a five bout card. The show, which was televised live on the Versus Network, attracted some of New York's famous actors and sport figures, including Bert Young (Paulie from Rocky), Chuck Zito, as well as running backs for the New York Giants, Brandon Jacobs, and Danny Ware amongst many others.

In the first televised bout of the night, former WBO heavyweight champion, Brooklyn's own Shannon Briggs (49-5-1, 43KO), returned to the ring for the first time in two years in impressive fashion, knocking out Marcus McGee (22-18, 11KO) with a crippling right hook to the body at 2:01 of the very first round. McGee was down for several minutes following the knockout, with spectators at ringside being quoted as saying they could hear McGee's rips crack from the blow.

Briggs will now look to stay busy as he hopes to get another shot at a heavyweight World Championship.

Promoter GARY SHAW formally offered to promote the rematch between Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones, Jr. – on the undercard of undefeated two-time light heavyweight champion CHAD DAWSON’S next fight. Shaw faxed the offer letter (see attached pdf of original letter) to Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Boy Promotions, Hopkins’ promoter, earlier today. HBO is holding an April 2010 date for Dawson’s next world championship fight.

After congratulating Schaefer on Hopkins’ 12-round light heavyweight decision victory over fringe middleweight contender Enrique Ornleas, Shaw wrote the following:

Hopkins knows that if he fights me he’s looking at a loss of Calzaghe proportions.

Statement From Winky Wright On Cancellation Of Back to Business

Amid conflicting reports regarding reasons for the cancellation of the Winky Wright vs. Grady Brewer Pay-Per-View show scheduled for December 11, Winky Wright has issued the following statement.

"I am really disappointed the show can't happen as I was training very hard and really wanted to get back in the ring. I was so looking forward to fighting in Puerto Rico in front of all the Puerto Rican people who are boxing fanatics and really know and appreciate the sport.

"I still am a bit shocked the show was cancelled by the promoter in Puerto Rico, but I want to make it perfectly clear it was not because I asked for millions of dollars to fight. We had done everything possible to make this show come together and I knew the financial considerations I needed to make in order for it to happen. Unfortunately now this is not the case, and I will look to find another alternative so I can fight as soon as possible. I hope that we can work something out so that I will be fighting in the early part of 2010, as I am anxious to use all the hard work and training I have already put in for this show. I just hope everyone has a great holiday season, and look for me to fight again soon after the New Year."

JOHNSON VS. KLITSCHKO TO AIR ON HBO

It has been announced that HBO's World Championship Boxing will televise the upcoming bout between Star Boxing's undefeated heavyweight contender, Kevin "Kingpin" Johnson (22-0-1, 9KO) and Vitali Klitschko (38-2, 37KO) for the WBC Heavyweight Championship of the World on December 12th. In addition to Johnson vs. Klitschko, which will take place at the PostFinance Arena in Bern, Switzerland, HBO will also be airing Victor Ortiz vs. Antonio Diaz and the rematch between Juan Diaz and Paulie Malignaggi from the UIC Pavilion in Chicago on HBO's Boxing After Dark. Truax Wins WBF Title in St. Paul !

St. Paul, MN- In front of a standing room only crowd at the St. Paul Armory Caleb “Golden” Truax of Osseo, MN claimed the WBF Intercontinental Super Middleweight title by cruising to a unanimous decision win over fellow prospect Kerry Hope.

Truax was able to find his rhythm and timing through the early portion of the fight until cuts opened on both fighters after a clash of heads in the third round. Through proficient work of both cutmen, Truax and Hope were able continue with few problems. Truax‘s counter punching ability gave Hope nightmares throughout the ten round affair and a few hard uppercuts drew loud cheers from the pro-Truax crowd.

England’s Hope took a number of hard shots but continued to press forward, although unable to match Truax’s connection percentage. Truax finished the fight strong behind chants of his last name from the St. Paul Armory and a mutual respect between the two combatants was visibly evident.

Scores across the board were 97-93 in Truax’s favor. In addition to picking up the vacant WBF Intercontinental Super Middleweight title, Truax improves to 14-0 (9 KO’s) while Hope falls to 12-3(1 KO).

Team Ruiz responds to King’s false press releases

Press Release: LAS VEGAS (Nov. 23, 2009) –

Team Ruiz has responded to false allegations made in two press releases by promoter Don King, who erroneously stated that, “John Ruiz is my fighter,” as well as falsely claiming the World Boxing Association (WBA) had sanctioned an “Interim” title fight between one of King’s fighters, Kali Meehan, and former champion Ruslan Chagaev.

Ruiz’ contract with Don King Productions (DKP) expired last month, prior to his Nov. 7 fight against Adnan Serin, legally allowing Ruiz to become a promotional free agent.

Team Ruiz believes King’s actions are out of desperation because he has lost his influence with all of the major boxing organizations and broadcast outlets as well as many of his fighters leaving or trying to leave him. Plus, Team Ruiz contends that King is seeking retribution against Team Ruiz for its successful blocking of King’s bid at the recent WBA convention in Colombia to create an “Interim” title fight involving one of his fighters. King also failed to have Chagaev, promoted by a different company, dropped in the WBA ratings behind three other King-promoted heavyweights.

Team Ruiz also asserts that King misled and lied to WBA directors at the convention by falsely claiming Haye would not fight Ruiz and was set to relinquish the WBA belt to fight one of the Klitschko brothers.

“It’s shame that Don King’s influence in the boxing industry has diminished so much that he has stooped to this level,” Ruiz’ manager/legal advisor Atty. Tony Cardinale said. “The fact is John Ruiz’ contract expired, by its own terms, Oct. 9, 2009. Apparently, Don has lost his ability to read or count as well. Any claim that he has made about DKP still having John under contract is simply a case of King attempting to confuse the public and negatively affect John’s opportunities to engage a new promoter. All of his recent actions, including distribution of a knowingly false press release regarding a so-called WBA sanctioned ‘Interim’ title fight between Meehan and Chagaev, are an effort by Don King to damage the Haye-Ruiz fight, which he has nothing to do with.”

WBA Orders Interim Heavyweight Championship:

Kali Meehan and Ruslan Chagaev to Meet for Title

The World Boxing Association held meetings at their recent annual convention in Medellin, Colombia, where they ordered an interim heavyweight championship between WBA No. 1-ranked mandatory challenger Kali Meehan and former WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev.

Meehan earned the WBA No. 1 position in October 2007 by scoring a sixth-round technical knockout over DaVarryl Williamson at Madison Square Garden, and he has been patiently waiting to fight for the WBA heavyweight championship ever since.

“I am grateful Don King has maintained his faith in me, and I will become the WBA interim heavyweight champion,” Meehan said. “I look forward to meeting and defeating Ruslan Chagaev and then facing the winner of David Haye versus John Ruiz.”

The WBA confirmed that the winner of Meehan-Chagaev will face the winner of the match between newly crowned WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and WBA heavyweight mandatory challenger John Ruiz.

Meehan’s promoter, Don King, said he’s relieved Meehan will finally get the match he was promised.

“Kali has been very loyal and committed to the WBA and their problems while waiting over two years to appear in the world championship match he earned,” King said. “He understood their problems and has been patient, going along with them to keep the WBA in good standing.”

“The WBA is committed to Kali Meehan fighting for their interim heavyweight championship and for the winner of this match to become mandatory challenger for their most prestigious crown, the WBA heavyweight championship.

JOHN MOLINA VS HONORIO FOR VACANT NABF TITLE

Talented, promising lightweight prospect John Molina Jr. (18-0, 14 KOs) of Covina, Calif., will make his main event debut when he puts his unblemished record on the line against veteran Martin “El Brochas” Honorio (26-4-1, 14 KOs) of Mexico in a 10-rounder for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) lightweight championship in a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation, this Saturday, Nov. 28 live on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

In the co-feature, undefeated Los Angeles native Rico “Suavecito” Ramos (13-0, 8 KOs) will meet Los Angeles resident and World Boxing Council (WBC) USNBC super bantamweight belt-holder Alejandro “El Alacran” Perez (14-1-1, 9 KOs ) in an eight-round junior bantamweight bout.

The doubleheader two days after Thanksgiving will feature four boxers capable of beating the stuffing out of each other. They have combined for 45 knockouts. The event is promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions and will emanate from the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula , Calif.

Molina, who was born and raised in Monterey Park, Calif., is excited about headlining his first nationally televised fight card, and if all goes right for him, the 5-foot-10 1/2 inch 26-year-old doesn’t expect it to last long. Of Molina’s 14 knockouts, six have come in the first round and five in the second.

The lanky Molina’s last five bouts have ended by knockout, including his last outing on Sept. 26 at Los Angeles’ STAPLES Center when Molina ended his night 34 seconds after it began, flattening former United States Boxing Association (USBA) 135-pound titlist Efren Hinojosa with a right hand to the ribs, followed by a left-hand uppercut to the chin.

“I can’t wait for Nov. 28. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas,” said Molina, who is trained by Joe Goossen and turned pro on March 31, 2006. “I know I always say it’s my ‘launching pad,’ but this is really it. This is my coming-out party.

“Everybody knows that I’ve arrived in this weight division and I’m a force to be reckoned with. I’m staying at lightweight. I felt a lot stronger in my last fight, the way I obliterated Hinojosa. I’m a dominating figure in there. I’m going to be stronger than anyone in there. Right now, I feel like I’m on top of my game and it’ll only get better and better from here. I’m more afraid of losing my edge than being lazy.”

A fighter seemingly equipped to derail Molina off the fast track to stardom is the vastly more experienced Honorio, a 5-foot-9 1/2-inch, 29-year-old former USBA champion and world title challenger who has won two straight and is 7-1-1 in his last nine.

Honorio, whose only loss since April 2005 came to ShoBox alum and then-IBF featherweight champion and current IBF 130-pound kingpin, Robert “The Ghost’’ Guerrero, is a 10-year pro who exemplifies the warrior-like spirit fans associate with Mexican fighters.

Honorio’s most noteworthy triumphs include a 12-round decision over Rogers Mtagwa in November 2006, a 10-round decision over current World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Steven Luevano in November 2005 and a first-round knockout over current IBF 135-pound titleholder Cristobal Cruz in August 2002.

Honorio’s experience against so many quality fighters makes him a more battle-hardened opponent than anything Molina has seen.
 

Zsolt Erdei and the Cruiserweight Division

Zsolt Erdei (31- 0, 17kos) seized the WBC Cruiserweight belt from defending champion Giacobbe Frogmenni (26-2 -1, 10kos) in a 12 round competitive contest in front of a boisterous crowd at the in Sparkassen-Arena, Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein in Germany

Although Zsolt got the decision I believe Frogemeni deserved the nod as the defending champion and he certainly proved his point by pressuring Erdei from the middle rounds to the bell, and the judges acknowledged his efforts, but scored it 115-113, 114-114 and 115-113 razor thinly against the 40 years Italian.

I have never been a fan of the unbeaten Hungarian Zsolt Erdie, mostly because he restricted most of his fights to his adopted country of Germany and also because I never got to see any of his fights before today if not for the internet , but nevertheless he really impressed me in this fight because despite weighing in at a very light 178.8 lbs, he still withstood all the 195.88lbs Frogemeni had to offer and went toe to toe in this fast ...more

MIGUEL ESPINO ; GOOD CALL BY "TEAM PAVLIK".

Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik was forced to make a decision. Fight or lose his title...Despite his well documented medical problems he was forced to confront this situation. In boxing's bullshit politics it became a do or die call for Team Pavlik. Despite all the problems Kelly has endured they have made the decision to fight.
The opponent will be the formidable Miguel Espino. The fight will take place December 19th at the Beeghly Center at Youngstown State University. It will likely be a sell out crowd of Pavlik supporters. In my humble opinion Espino was a good choice by Team Pavlik. Why ?

In total honesty Espino's record does not merit a title shot. Although it is a glossy 20-2-1, he has lost to the two best fighters he has met. He dropped a decision to Daniel Edouard and he lost to Peter Manfredo Jr. in the "Contender" TV series. He has defeated some decent boxers like Jonathan Reid, Dorian Beaupierre and Arturo Ortega. Hardly enough though to merit a shot at the brass ring.

At this point in time though I feel Espino is a good foe for Kelly. It is a fighter Kelly should beat to break off the ring rust. Back in the days of just the WBA and WBC, champions fought many non title fights just to stay sharp. Turn back the hands of time and Pavlik - Espino would have been regarded as a non - title affair in my day.

Hopefully this confrontation will be competitve and fan friendly. If Kelly wins in front of a roaring hometown crowd, I would like to see him back in action in February 2010. Maybe against a higher profile fighter like John Duddy or Manfredo Jr. Again these are boxers Kelly should beat. If so, let's hope to see Kelly Pavlik - Paul Williams in the Spring of 2010.
