REGGIE JOHNSON PRESS RELEASE Determined to continue his road to a great career, Houston.s own son, winner and defender of two World Boxing Title Championships, one as 1998 NABF, IBF and USBA Light Heavyweight Champ and another 1992 WBA and USBA Middleweight Champ is Reggie .Sweet. Johnson. Reggie is scheduled to fight a Light Heavyweight match, August 27, 2005 at the Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville, LA on a co-main event ticket with Blake .Candyman. Provost. Reggie.s trainer is legendary , Maurice .Termite. Watkins. His Agent is Kerry Daigle. The promoter for the event is Warrior Boxing Promotion and marketed by CeeCee E. Dogins for Houston based NESE, Inc. Sports & Entertainment Group.Reggie.s fight career has span some twenty years. He has traveled to many countries from the age of fifteen years old as an amateur boxer. He has fought all over the world. His last official Championship fight was fought against Antonio Tarver in January 25, 2002. Reggie suffered a busted ear drum and a defeat by split decision to Tarver. Reggie was derailed for a period of time due the ear problem, followed by the death of his father. The death of his father and other personal issues has halted Reggie.s ring action. When asked what has kept him from the ring so long, his reply was that, "I waited out a dispute.I had a personal lost and for so long, I got tired of the system. I wanted to keep control of my own fate." Watkins, a former boxer who gained fame last year by organizing Iraq’s first Olympic boxing team, said Johnson’s absence from the ring won’t be a factor by the time they’re through training."On every strong structure, you start with the foundation," said Watkins. "We started with the legs and worked up. We’re going slow, we are not going to try and rebuild his career in a day. It’s important to have that foundation in place,.and there’s another intangible that Johnson possesses that helps . "He knows what it takes to win and that’s important," said Watkins. Reggie has fought many fights and has never been knocked out in a match. He holds a career 24 Knock Outs to date in a total of 50 professional matches. He has done Houston proud. He even helped to bring professional Las Vegas styled boxing to the University of Houston in 2001. The event was a success for the people of Houston as they came out in droves to support their own son. Reggie never intended staying out of the ring so long, but one delay lead to another. Still he has never stopped his training and rigorous boxing regiments. Some of the younger boxers look at him and often ask him how he does it when sparring. Reggie often answers them in a reply that, . I just keep at it; boxing is not just a part of me, but ALL of me.. adding that, .My heart is not just in boxing, but ALL of me is in boxing and boxing is in ALL me!...Reggie.s trainer says that Reggie.s ring action is, ". as close to picture-perfect as you will see." Johnson is hoping that form will lead to another world title, in spite of the fact that it’s been 3 1/2 years since his last bout, a split decision loss to Antonio Tarver for the NABF and USBA Light Heavyweight titles Johnson owned. While Johnson came out of retirement once before, he said this is a different scenario. "To be honest,it’s not a comeback," Johnson said during the June press conference at Copeland’s Restaurant in Alexander. LA to promote the upcoming fight."It’s A GET BACK!... I.m only in it to GET BACK what.s MINE!.. before I go off to my rocking chair." .I’ve had two world titles and the difference this time, is the motivation of gaining all the things that I left on the table," said the Houston resident. "I want the money and fame to help my family and disadvantaged children in the community. In my absence from the ring I have started a ’Knocking Out Drugs’ program. Due and in part, because of the close relationship of drugs in my family and near community. I’ve seen first hand what drugs have done to my neighborhood and to my family. Personally I’ve never drank alcohol or beer. I have never smoked or used drugs, but drugs have had an effect on me indirectly. I know I can do so much more to stir children and my community in general away from drugs with a world title and the spotlight on me andmy positive fame." .My heart knows that to keep even our best laid plans as we struggle to make them a reality; the road is sealed only by hard work and dedication to whatever it is that your desire entails. I am dedicated to hard work and I come from a long bloodline of fighters.. Claiming to be a distant 5th generation blood cousin to Galveston.s own son, Jack .Arthur. Johnson, dubbed .The Galveston Giant. who became the first BlackAfrican-American Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World and the blood cousins of professional boxers, Golden Johnson and Starr Johnson. I guess that boxing does run deep in the Johnson family bloodline. After all it was Reggie.s Uncle Kenneth .Iron Man. Walker that first introduced Reggie to the World of Boxing by taking him to the Salvation Army.s Boys Club Boxing Team in his early teens. Kenneth Walker was a popular and decorated amateur champion boxer, who never turned professional. Reggie.s father was schoolmate and friends with World Heavyweight Champion George Forman. The two friends often traveled the Houston streets together. Both men were from the Fifth Ward area of Houston.Reggie says that, . I realize that as far as entertainment and sports is concerned; entertainment and sports is constantly changing, with new definitions cropping up daily, so to be on top, it.s only a matter of staying ahead of the game. Personnel sacrifices have to be made, and usually made very often, to always stay ahead of the game to be a winner by developing infrastructures that are solid, yet, interchangeable in order to stay ahead of the ever changing games of entertainment and sports industries!..... as he pauses before adding, .I have been able to do that, therefore, even though it has been what seem to some as a long, long time coming for me to be where I am at now; in this happy place, win or lose, I.m still me!....Even though I did not land here over night, I am very happy and BLESSED to be me!..... | |||||||
