RAY AUSTIN UPSETS BECK ; BRAITHWAITE STOPPED

By Jim Amato

Gund Arena-Cleveland, Ohio- Local heavyweight contender Ray Austin took a big step up the rankings ladder by outscoring highly regarded Owen Beck. At one time Beck was grouped with Calvin Brock and Sam Peter as the best prospects in the division. A loss to Monte Barrett dropped Beck's stock a bit. Still Beck was supposed to get by late substitute Austin who had stepped in for an injured Sergei Liakhovich. Austin made the best of his new found situation. Ray hurt Beck in the first round and got his respect. Beck would be competitive throughout but Austin rocked him again in the eleventh. The scoring went 115-113 and 117-111 for Austin while Beck received a 115-113 vote. Austin has drawn with Lance Whitaker and Larry Donald and with his split decision win over Beck he may be on the verge of cracking the top ten.

Also on the card former cruiser weight champion Wayne Braithwaite was stopped at 2:26 of the fourth round by GuillermoJones. It was a slugfest while it lasted. Late in the forth Jones hurt Braithwaite and a follow up flurry prompted the referee Jim Villers to jump in and halt the bout. Braithwaite was livid over the stoppage but it stands as a kayo win for the hard hitting Jones.

Former bantamweight champion Tim Austin battered game Reynaldo Hurtado who was knocked down on three different occasions. The bout was finally halted at 2:49 of the fifth round and awarded to the come backing Austin.

In another cruiser weight contest Steve Cunningham remained undefeated by soundly outscoring former champion Kelvin Davis. Cunningham won by margins of 117-111 twice and 118-110.
