Mundine-Green
Double Header The press conference for the Anthony Mundine-Danny Green double header was held today at the Challenge Stadium in Perth Western Australia, the home town of the hugely popular Super middleweight contender Danny “Green Machine”Green. Both Mundine and Green will be showcased in separate fights on Sunday night, Green against the Mexican hardman Kirino Garcia, and Mundine against the stylish Samoan Rico Chong Nee. A fight between Anthony Mundine, 24-3 (19 ko’s) and Danny Green, 20-2 (19ko’s), has been putting boxing back on the map in Australia, with nearly everybody having their opinion as to who is the superior boxer. Mundine entered first and appeared confident as usual even though he is in hostile territory, being the enemy of hometown hero Danny Green. If his confidence wasn’t apparent as he walked in flexing his muscles for the media it definitely was as soon as his infamous mouth opened. Green is robotic and slow, I don’t see what all the fuss is about to be honest, it would take him two years trying to land a punch on me.” Said Mundine. When questioned by yours truly about what would happen if Green did land on his chin Mundine fired up. “He will not hit me whole fight, he is not in my class, he’s a good fighter but im a great fighter, I know he’s the one who is chinny and I will prove that when I land, lets see what happens when I land because I believe he is the one who is chinny.” Mundines opponent Rico Chong Nee, 10-6-2 (6 ko’s) , originally from Samoa and now based in Auckland, New Zealand, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. “ I want to thank the promoters for the opportunity, this is the biggest fight of my life and I haved trained hard, you can’t box forever so I have to take these opportunities and do my best.” While Rico Chong Nee’s unorthodox style could be a problem for some, for Mundine, a man who has beaten the likes of Antwun Echols and battled fighters such as Sven Ottke and Mikkel Kessler, it should be as competitive as a mugging. Next up was the local boy, but not before team Mundine left the building to avoid any confrontation with Green. Mundine and Green have never met face to face even though they have been publicly insulting each other any chance they get. Green and Kirino Garcia ,37-26-3 (27 ko’s), shook hands before taking their seats, Green having obvious respect for his Mexican opponent, who has had an amazing career that saw him lose his first eighteen fights, on some occasions having to swim over the border to America, just to fight men much bigger and experienced than himself, all to support his family. Garcia went on to achieve what would have seemed impossible at the time, winning thirty seven of his next forty eight fights, three being draws. With Simon Brown,Meldrick Taylor,Frankie Randall and Jorge Vaca some of the victims on his resume (and a controversial loss to David Reid) he has shown that given the time to train, he is a world class fighter that is always dangerous. While Green managed to throw in some insults for Mundine , calling him a “peanut” and “unintelligent” , it was clear he was focused mainly on Garcia and the task ahead on Sunday night. “ I have watched tapes of Garcia and he is a typical Mexican fighter coming forward, and I definitely don’t like going backwards, so it will be an interesting fight.” When asked about his division and possible match ups, Green was quick to talk Jeff Lacy. “ Jeff Lacy is the best super middle weight in the world at the moment, and you have to respect a man that will travel to England to defend his title against Calzaghe. “ Garcia, speaking with an interpreter, seemed relaxed an confident. “ I am a Mexican fighter, I don’t want to make a prediction, but as a proud Mexican fighter I will always show up and fight hard.” While Green-Garcia is not the last fight of the night, that honor being Mundines after some negotiating earlier in the week, it will definitely be the most competitive, and to the fans at Challenge stadium on Sunday and the fans watching on TV, it will also be a chance to see how much Green has improved under new trainer Ismael Salas, who took over after Green’s dissapointing performance against WBC champion Markus Beyer earlier in the year. The undercard is featuring some undefeated Australian talent, with 22-0 (14ko’s) middleweight Daniel Dawson, 10-0(4 ko’s) Ahmed Elomar and his brother Mohammed Elomar 9-0 (2 ko's) who are both featherweights.
