IBRAGIMOV DEMOLISHES MORA
By Michael Amakor from Ringside
New York (March 10, 2007) WBO Asia Pacific Heavyweight Champion Sultan Ibragimov needed just 46 seconds to destroy overmatched opponent Javier Mora at the theater in Madison Square Garden, in New York City.
The bell had barely sounded when Mora quickly circled around the Sultan and suddenly rushed forward with a combinative two fisted assault trying to trap Ibragimov against the ropes, the Sultan to his credit immediately side stepped and countered with rapid fire left hooks to the head and body that dropped Mora into the ropes as the crowd rose to its feet in wild excitement. Mora untangled himself from the ropes and scrambled dazedly to his feet, and after stepping forward as instructed by the referee who checked him out, they fight continued.
But the Sultan smelt blood and went in for kill as he cornered the hurt Mora against the ropes, he calmly proceeded to fires off several rapid right hooks and uppercuts before switching to straight lefts punches that landed cleanly on the cowering Mora who held himself up against the ropes trying valiantly to protect himself by holding his gloves to his head as the punches landed straight through and around his guard. After more than 15 unanswered shots the referee stepped in and waved off the fight to the delight of the crowd who crowded the ring.
It is difficult to imagine what this fight does for the Sultan who was supposed to have been fighting Briggs for the WBO heavyweight title, but ended instead ended up fighting Mora after Briggs pulled out of their scheduled fight due to pneumonia. Nevertheless he improved his record to 20 wins and a draw which includes 18 memorable knockout over Friday Ahunanya, Lance Whitaker, and a draw with Ray Austin, he no doubt has to go back to the drawing board to reopen complicated negotiations for another title shot. For Mora who once lost a unanimous decision to Fres Oquendo for the WBO Latino Heavyweight Belt the road to glory and recognition gets more cloudy with this loss, but he no doubt will be back into contention soon enough.
Prominent in attendance was former undisputed Middleweight King Bernard Hopkins whose Golden Boy outfit promotes Sultan Ibragimov, so also was legendary former WBA Light Heavyweight Iran Barkley, and Sechew Powell to name a few. The bout was promoted by Seminole Warriors.
UNDERCARD ACTION
In heavyweight action former IBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight Champion Roman Greenberg put in a workmanlike performance and dominated Michael Simms down the ten round stretch to earn a unanimous decision in the eyes of the judges.
