What
About Me(han)???
Former undisputed and
two-time heavyweight champion Hasim "The Rock"
Rahman has this to say in reaction to news that
former heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev will be
facing Kali Meehan in an important showdown with
world-title implications: WHAT?!?
"I destroyed Kali
Meehan in four rounds at Madison Square Garden,"
growled Rahman. "Yes, it was in 2004, but he's only
gotten older since then and not only has he not
beaten anyone important since then, he hasn't even
fought anybody worth mentioning!"
Rahman (45-7-2, 36 KOs)
says he would love to step in and face Chagaev. "How
do you fight Kali Meehan for a shot at the title
when the guy who knocked him out is right here ready
to go?"
To compound the matter,
Meehan hasn't fought since August of 2008. "I got
nothing against Kali Meehan," continued Rahman, "but
both times he's stepped up in competition, he's been
stopped. I've been in huge fights with all the top
opponents. So how do you prepare for a title shot by
facing him?"
Rahman's promoter, Greg Cohen of The Empire, says
he'd be happy to bring Rahman out to Chagaev's home
base of Germany. "Rock will travel anywhere they
want to make this happen. No offense to Kali Meehan,
but it's insulting to boxing fans to call this a
major heavyweight fight. Hasim Rahman deserves this
fight a heck of a lot more than Kali Meehan, that's
for sure."

Jermain Taylor in a bout selected as the “Fight of

America. Pavlik defeated Taylor handily in their

Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KOs), a native of Argentina who
fights out of Madrid, Spain, first made his presence
known to the boxing world in 2007 by knocking out
Saul Roman (27-2) in the fourth round of their WBC

later, Martinez captured the WBC interim super
welterweight title with an eighth-round stoppage of
Alex Bunema. He was elevated to WBC world super
welterweight champion in the latter half of 2009. In
his last fight, he lost a highly-disputed 12-round

Why Talk
about Freedom?—Jack Johnson
By:
George Hanson Jr., Esq -
February 15, 2010
Before Muhammad Ali,
there was Jack Johnson—black, brash, bold,
uncompromising. He was a rich celebrity athlete
looming larger than life, breaking social taboos and
oftentimes causing men to question their manhood. In
the process, he became the most notorious
African-American on the planet. Facing the world
unafraid, Johnson won the heavyweight championship,
made a fortune, drove fast cars, wore expensive
suits, appeared regularly in the press, and later in
radio and in motion pictures, married three white
women, became a fugitive, fled the States for seven
years, spent a year in jail, authored two books and
patented a wrench before his life ended in a car
crash in 1946. Why talk about freedom?
I discovered Jack
Johnson in a dusty volume of Before the Mayflower: A
History of Black America, 1619-1962 (1963) by Lerone
Bennett tucked away on a bookcase in my seventh
grade homeroom. One year removed from Jamaica, I
read the entire three-volume set which gave me a
crash course in American history. Given the backdrop
of the time,...continue

Elio
Rojas Defends Title Against Guty
Espadas
Press Release: Pictures
From the World Boxing Council
World
Boxing Council featherweight champion Elio “The Kid”
Rojas will make his first title defense against WBC
No. 3-ranked Guty Espadas on Saturday at Paliforum
Zamna in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.
Cancun Boxing and Don King Productions are
promoting the event, which has been branded “The
Kukulcan Battle at Yucatan, Mexico.” The same firms
promoted the highly successful 2008 WBC heavyweight
championship match between Samuel “The Nigerian
Nightmare” Peter and Oleg Maskaev in Cancun.
Rojas (21-1, 13 KOs), 27, a native of the
Dominican Republic now fighting out of Brooklyn,
N.Y., arrived in Merida late last week to make final
preparations for Saturday’s match.
“Merida and all of Yucatan are very beautiful and
I’m happy to be here,” Rojas said. “I have been
greeted warmly by the Mexican people, and I want to
win them over in the ring. It is always an honor to
fight in front of fans that love boxing and are part
of all the great history here.”
Espadas (45-7, 28 KOs) is a native of Merida who
has tangled in the past with big names like Erik
Morales and Rocky Juarez. A win here in front of his
hometown fans would be the highlight of his career.
Meeting fighters on their home turf is nothing
new for the rapidly emerging Rojas. He won the WBC
crown at the 126-pound limit in Tokyo, Japan,
winning a convincing unanimous decision over
then-champion Takahiro Aoh on July 14, 2009.

Grano out
to avenge vs Mark “Oak Tree” Brown
February. 15, 2010
Popular
heavyweight prospect Tony “TNT” Grano values
avenging his lone pro loss more than money and fame,
which is precisely why he desperately wanted a
rematch against Mark “Oak Tree” Brown, headlining
the March 12th “Brace For Impact” card, presented by
Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports,
Inc. (CES), in Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino
in Mashantucket, Conn.
Grano (16-1-1, 13 KOs),
a 2005 U.S. National Championships winner and
National Golden Gloves Tournament runner-up, has won
two in a row since losing to Brown (15-2, 7 KOs),
who overcame two knockdowns to stop Grano in the
eighth round of their WBF All-Americas title bout
Sept. 27, 2008.
Coming off his
sensational, nationally-televised knockout of
previously-undefeated prospect Travis Kaufman (18-0)
last September, Grano had clearly targeted Brown,
rather than a top 20 rated opponent, and CES gave
him the opportunity for revenge.
“For me, personally,”
Grano explained, “I wanted this rematch more than
any fight. Ranking-wise, I don’t need it because
I’ve already surpassed him (Brown), and my fight on
ShoBox (vs. Kaufman) showed everybody it (fight vs.
Brown) was a fluke. No excuses, though, I’m not like
that. I had a bad night and he had a good night.

Writers Note:
It has now
been 20 years since Mike Tyson shockingly lost the
heavyweight title to Buster Douglas in Tokyo and as
we revisit its significance in boxing history, some
people still lament about what could have been if
the youngest undisputed champion had not lost that
day 20 years ago, a tragedy still vivid in the minds
of boxing fans as if it happened
yesterday. In his first
steps in fulfillment of this article hopes Tyson and
Don King re-united even if for a brief moment, Tyson
made a movie and Buster Douglas has been doing the
radio talk show circuit, who knows there may be a
possibility that Tyson may step back in the ring to
settle the score just like Hopkins is trying to do
versus Roy Jones.
The Dream of Tyson Lives On

On Saturday June 11,
2005, former undisputed heavyweight champion Iron
Mike Tyson suffered another humiliating and shocking
defeat after his well publicized comeback, in a
fight no one thought he could possibly lose.
Before the fight we caught glimpses of the old Mike
Tyson uttering vile invectives about Kevin McBride,
describing him as a tomato can.” I’m gonna gut him
like a fish" he barked convincingly. His rants made
us all reminiscent about past bombasts from a
younger Tyson who once declared “There is not a man
alive today that can beat me?” Everybody was pumped

TEAM
VALUEV PROPOSES ‘60-40’ Split VS KLITCHKO
King and Sauerland Event Make Counter Offer on
Behalf of Nikolai Valuev
To Face WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko
Don King Productions and Sauerland Event have countered K2 Promotions latest
offer to former two-time World Boxing Association
heavyweight champion Nikolai “Giant Russian” Valuev
(50-2, 34 KOs) to face World Boxing Council
heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KOs)
with a deal calling for a 60-40 percentage split.
“They approached us with a $1 million offer for
Valuev to face Vitali, and Sauerland Event and I
told them we would like $4 million for the fight,”
King said. “Now they’ve come back to us with a $2
million guarantee. We countered with a 60-40 split
of revenue.
“K2 is making the money more important than the
attraction. They are promoting the money while I
promote the attraction. The attraction recoups your
investment and leads to profit. People-wise and
money-wise, this is the way you have to think—and
people-wise is the most important.”
King said he and Sauerland Event, on behalf of
Valuev, are convinced that K2 Promotions, on behalf
of Vitali Klitschko, are focusing on obtaining
Valuev for the lowest amount of money when they
should be focusing on auctioning the ability to host
the event and television rights to the highest
bidders.
“If K2 Promotions auctions off the rights to
become the host site for this extravaganza as well
as television rights to Germany, Russia and Ukraine,
we believe that alone will bring in over $10
million,” King said. We are so confident in this
that we are willing to risk guaranteed money in
favor of 40 percent of the revenue stream, which we
believe will bring team Valuev $4 million or more.” |
Froch vs Kessler on April 24
Photos by Howard Schatz
Feb. 12,
2010 —Team Sauerland and Hennessy Sports are proud
to announce that the Super Six World Boxing Classic
tournament group stage 2 fight between WBC Super
Middleweight Champion Carl Froch and the Viking
Warrior Mikkel Kessler will take place at the MCH
Messecentre, Herning in Denmark on the 24th April
2010. The fight will be televised in the United
States on SHOWTIME® beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT. In
Denmark, the fight will be broadcast on Viasat.
Hennessy Sports will be announcing the UK TV
broadcaster over the next week.
The two superstars lock horns in the second round
of this unprecedented boxing tournament,with
Kessler eager to make up for his opening loss
against Andre Ward. The WBC Champ Carl Froch comes
off a split decision victory over Andre Dirrell.
“With the support of my great Danish fans, I will
defeat Carl Froch and become world champion again,”
Kessler said. “The atmosphere at MCH Herning is
incredible. I only have the best of memories of the
venue. The TKO victory over Perdomo last September
confirmed my place in the Super Six. After a bad
start, I am now out for a knock-out and the first
three points..”
Froch is concerned that the date change will
affect his travelling fans. “I am upset for my fans
with the change of date but this has been
unpreventable due to scheduling issues. I just hope
that my fans will understand this change and will
still come in their thousands to support me in
Herning.
The WBC champion is convinced he will defend his
title in spectacular fashion. “I am looking to be
the first fighter to take Mikkel Kessler out before
the final bell. I have gone to Jermain Taylor´s
backyard and defended my belt and I am more than
happy to do the same with Kessler. As the Champion I
will prove that I can fight and beat the best
anywhere.”
In September 2009, Kessler defended his WBA Title
with a fourth-round stoppage of mandatory challenger
Gusymr Perdomo. A sell-out crowd of 6,250 fans
raised the roof to support Denmark´s national hero.
90 percent of the tickets were gone within three
hours after the start of the sale. Kalle Sauerland
expects tickets to sell even faster this time out.
“I know that the Danish fight fans will rally behind
Mikkel and support him in the most important fight
of his life,” Sauerland said. “His career is on the
line. But with 10,000 fans behind him – the MCH will
provide a bigger arena this time out – I will be
expecting Mikkel to collect 3 points and the WBC
belt from Froch.

World class Tanzanian
Mbwana ”African Golden Boy” Matumla, 19-4 (11), will
defend his Universal Boxing Organization
Intercontinental Bantamweight title on March 7 at
the PTA Hall in his hometown of Dar Es Salaam.
This was confirmed

former African champion, and current Ugandan
titlist, Sande Kizito who is coming off four
straight knockout victories. Kizito, 12-8-1 (5),
will be the underdog entering the ring, but will
find encouragement from his recent activity and from
looking back at good performances against world
class names such as Vic Darchinyan, Tabtimdaeng Na
Rachawat and Hussein Hussein.
The reigning champion
won the UBO title in December 2009 when he stopped
another Ugandan, Festus Omondi, in the fifth round
of a cracking fight promoted by Joseph Kusaga and
his Prime Time Promotions.
Mr. Kusaga will also stage the Matumla vs. Kizito
bout, and there are hopes that a second UBO title
fight can be added to the bill.

IT WAS A
KNOCKOUT WEEKEND ON GFL
GoFightliveTV
Press Release - February 8, 2010
This
past weekend two big boxing events on the east coast
took place and the action was as hot inside the ring
as it was cold outside. Despite blizzard conditions,
crowds in Philadelphia and Newark saw two incredible
nights of boxing that started out on Friday from The
Legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia where USBA
Jr. Middleweight champion Derek “Pooh” Ennis scored
a fifth round stoppage over Edwin Vazquez.
The next night in Newark, New Jersey, former
Light Heavyweight and Cruiserweight champion Tomasz
Adamek scored a unanimous decision victory over
former U.S. Olympian Jason Estrada in Adamek’s
second start as a Heavyweight. That bout was fought
before an astonishing crowd of over 10,000 fans in
the Prudential Center in Newark.
Both great events were streamed live and are now

In the main event, USBA Jr. Middleweight champion
Derek “Pooh” Ennis tuned up for a spring title
defense by dropping Edwin Vazquez twice in round
five with a vicious body assault to score a knockout
at 1:26 of that round in their scheduled eight round
non title clash.
Ennis showed tremendous hand speed and clearly
worked the body behind a solid jab. Vazquez showed a
lot of heart and determination as he would not only
mock Ennis but try to start some offense for
himself.
In round five, Ennis dropped Vazquez with a
blistering left to the body and moments later he did
the same thing to the other side of Vazquez’ body
with the right and the fight called off.
In one of the most anticipated undercard bouts,
Former World Junior Amateur champion Joey Dawejko of
Philadelphia needed just forty-seven seconds to
dispose of Ricardo Johnson.
Dawejko landed a perfect counter right hand that
thrilled the crowd that was heavily supporting the
nineteen year old from the Tacony section of town.

Adamek
Scores Unanimous Decision over Jason Estrada
Photo by Ed Mulholland - Replay at
8pm on SportsNet - http://web.sny.tv/schedule/index.jsp
In
front of an exuberant crowd of 10,123 predominantly
Adamek Fans, Tomasz Adamek defeated Jason Estrada in
a 12 Round decision last night, to retain the IBF
Heavyweight International Heavyweight title. The
official scores were 115-113, 116-112 and 118-110,
all in favor of Adamek.
“If everyone in this
room were completely honest with themselves you
would all admit that I got robbed. I mean I got
played. I might as well have had a gun pointed to my
head said Estrada” “At best I give Adamek three of
the twelve rounds. I seriously think the last judge
doesn’t need to judge anymore.” “Yeah I’m angry. I
fought my a_ _ off. I trained harder than I ever
have. I was in the best shape I’ve ever been in.
People talked about me possibly running out of gas,
but I never did. All he (Adamek) did was run.”
“It was the best Jason
Estrada I’ve ever seen in my life said Adamek. He
was 50 percent better today, than he when he fought
a top three heavyweight like Aleksander Powietkin.
Quick, with a good defense and a very hard head. It
was extremely difficult to locate precise punches,
because of his defense. Maybe, I should have use
more than three punches combination, maybe risk a
little more? I wanted to do it, but my trainer
Andrzej Gmitruk was telling me all the time in the
corner to be more boxer than puncher, avoid his
punches first, then use different temp to throw him
of his strategy. It was another test in heavyweight
division, versus very difficult to fight boxer. “
“I have couple of words for those who are saying
that I cannot fight Arreola because he is a much
better puncher than Estrada. First of all every
fight is different, and anyone who knows about
boxing can say “Estrada hit him, but Arreola will do
the same, and harder”. We don’t know that. Maybe it
will be easier for me to avoid punches from Arreola,
and maybe it will be easier for me to hit him! We
just don’t know, but won’t it be interesting to
see…“

Last Pre-Fight Jabs - Adamek vs Estrada
KAMIL KRZACZYNSKI
Tomasz
Adamek - “I never underestimate anyone, ever.
This is boxing; you have to be prepared every time
because you can lose not only the fight but also
your health. I know what’s at stake on Saturday –
for me and for Jason.”
“I’m always asked if I
feel worthy to be in the heavyweight division and my
answer always is – just watch me fight and you’ll
know the answer. I don’t expect anybody to respect
me because I was champion in two other weight
classes – just enjoy what you see when I’m in the
ring. I did not lose any strength as compared to
being a light heavyweight or cruiser weight.
Contrary – fighting at my natural weight helped me
be a better boxer. I expect to weigh around 222
pounds for the fight. That’s natural weight and
power, zero loss of energy.”
“Mine will be a great
mix of European and American style boxing because of
my two trainers – Roger Bloodworth and Andrzej
Gmitruk.“
“Jason is a very
unorthodox fighter for this weight class, buy I
always believed that no matter who I’m fighting
against, it is up to me if I win or lose. I know his
strengths; I’m sure he thinks he knows my
weaknesses. But whatever we are saying now makes no
difference whatsoever. You can prove yourself in
only one way – by winning. And this is exactly what
I intend to do on Saturday. Don’t blink, don’t miss
a second”. “I will win.”
Jason Estrada –
“Funny thing is when I was playing video games as a
light heavyweight I was always playing as Tomasz
Adamek. Loved his style and I still love what he did
in light heavy and cruiserweight division. But this
is different story, he’s among big boys now and it
will be over his head to fight people like me.
Experience, ring ability – everything is on my side.
He’s making a big error thinking that beating aging
Golota makes him a good heavyweight. Not at all.”
“I also understand that
he has to say the things he’s saying – about putting
me on canvas, talking about other fights after
fighting me. He has to believe it, but believing and
doing it are two different things.”
“This was my best training camp ever – by far. More
than 8 weeks of very hard work, no injuries, no
problems. I’m in my prime, I have to prove this now
and help Adamek to fight Steve Cunningham again – as
a cruiserweight. After this fight he will be
finished in my division. I will prove that those are
not just words this coming Saturday.”

Maurice Harris Going back to the
future
Press
Release - Feb. 5, 2010
Veteran
heavyweight Maurice “Sugar Moe” Harris, inactive for
the previous 26 months, recently returned to the
ring (Jan. 29) in Albuquerque, impressively winning
a 6-round unanimous decision (60-54, 60-54, 58-56)
against battle-tested Billy “The Kid” Zumbrun.
The 33-year-old Harris
(21-14-2, 10 KOs), winner of the “2002 Thunderbox
Heavyweight Tournament,” had fought only four times
in the past seven years due to his
promotional/managerial problems. His comeback is
under the banner of his new promoter, Boxing 360.
“I had a lot of rust to
work off,” New Jersey native Harris said. “I did
what I had to do to win, getting in the rounds and
not looking for the knock out. He’s a strong guy
with a hard head. I shook him a couple of times, but
he kept his left hand high, and it was tough to hit
him solid.
“I needed the work. I’m
going to stay busy because that’s the philosophy of
my promoter, Boxing 360. We’re taking it slow; no
rush getting to the top. Being with Boxing 360 is
like night and day compared to my old promoters.”
In 2002, Harris knocked
out previously unbeaten and future world
title-holder Sergey Lyakhovich (16-0) in the ninth
round, earning Harris a slot in that November’s
“Thunderbox” tournament, in which he captured the
$100,000 winner’s purse by out-pointing Gerald
Nobles, Israel Garcia and Anthony Thompson,
respectively, in 3-round matches during the same
night of boxing.
Maurice’s up-and-down
career includes victories against David Izon, Jimmy
Thunder and Jeremy Williams, as well as Harris going
the distance with world champions Larry Holmes and
Chris Byrd.
“It felt good getting
in the ring again,” Maurice concluded. “I felt good,
considering the jet lag and high altitude, but
overall I’m happy with my performance. Watch-out
heavyweights, I’m coming.”

The Case
for the Roy Jones vs Hopkins Rematch
By Stuart Young
Now Hopkins Vs Jones II
has finally been signed & sealed after years of
speculation, hype, argument & counter-argument
between the two respective camps we can now look
ahead to the fight & try to determine the winner.
Scheduled for the
Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, on 3rd April, the rematch
arrives some 17 years after the original bout where
a youthful, flashy & brilliant Roy Jones outpointed
a rather ‘green’ Bernard Hopkins back in '93 in a
clash for the vacant IBF middleweight title.
Since that bout both
fighters have gone on to establish themselves as
future hall-of-famers. Jones has been up & down the
weights classes winning world titles in divisions up
to heavyweight, with it, earning himself the
reputation as undoubtedly the most talented fighter
of the 1990's.
Meanwhile, Hopkins stayed & rebuilt his career as a

Brown (15-2, 7 KOs)

All-Americas title bout Sept. 27, 2008.
Grano (16-1-1, 13 KOs

The popular power-puncher is coming off of a
sensational, nationally-televised knockout of

“Grano-Brown was an
exciting fight and we’re very happy to be promoting
their rematch March 12,” CES president Jimmy
Burchfield said. “Both of these heavyweights are
capable of putting their opponent to sleep at any

there."
Maddalone is coming off
a hard fought decision loss back in December to
former two-time cruiserweight champion, Jean Marc
Mormeck. The fight which took place in Mormeck's
native France, saw Maddalone press the action and
take the fight head on to Mormeck from the opening
bell. Mormeck as well as Maddalone , is known for
being a banger, but it was evident from the first
time Mormeck felt Maddalone's power he wanted no
part in the brutal exchanges and began circling and
boxing from the outside.
"I was surprised when
he started moving like he did," stated Maddalone.
"From the tapes I have seen of him he usually stood
right there in front of you, but then again that was
at cruiserweight. I could tell right away in the
first round when I hit him that I could hurt him."
In what was an exciting
fight, that brought the sold out crowd to their feet
multiple times throughout the contest, Maddalone
went on to lose by decision. Although Maddalone
lost, as was the case when he fought in Europe in
2008; he dropped another hard fought decision loss
to undefeated top five rated heavyweight Denis
Boytsov; he further added onto his fan base, a base
that has now begun to stretch worldwide.
"I'm a throwback
fighter. Anytime I am in that ring you know you are
going to see an exciting fight, and the people in
Europe, as do my fans here in the U.S, appreciate
that. Fighting is my life, it's what I love to do,
and come February 6th you can expect nothing less
out of me. As I do every time I step into that ring,
I am going to leave it all on the line and give the
fans something to be excited about."
A win in Atlantic City,
could set up another trip for Maddalone back to
Europe. There have been talks of Maddalone fighting
on the undercard of Mormeck's next fight, and if
both win, Maddalone- Mormeck II could be on the
horizon.
"I would love another
opportunity to face Mormeck. It was an exciting
fight that the fans loved, and want to see again,
but first things first, I must take care of business
this Saturday. |

Sylvester stops Lyell; Helenius TKOs Brewster
Promoter
PR: January 30,2010
Sebastian
Sylvester (33-3, 16 KOs) made a successful first
defence of his IBF Middleweight Title as he stopped
Billy Lyell in the tenth round in Neubrandenburg,
Germany. When the brave challenger was on the
receiving end of another hard series of punches,
coach Jack Loew threw the towel. “It was great to
defend my title in front of my fantastic fans,”
Sylvester said. “I am not 100 percent pleased with
my performance – I think I can do better – but I
have retained my title and that is all that matters.
Lyell was very active and hard to hit but I am glad
I wore him down.”
Much to the delight of
the sell-out crowd of 4,500 fans, who had made it to
arena despite heavy snow storms, Sylvester was on
the front foot from the first second on. His defence
gave the mobile challenger only few chances to
connect, while Sylvester fired in his jab and also
left-right combinations that rocked Lyell (21-8, 4
KOs). “I fought my heart out but I take my hat off
to Sylvester,” Lyell said. “He is very strong. I
tried to slow him down but I could not do it. His
power made the difference tonight. His right kept
hitting me on the same spot all ..continue

Don
“Da’Bomb” George Destroys Williams in 3!
By
Cestus Press- January 31, 2010
Last
Friday night at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago ,
Illinois , fight fans were treated to another great
night of boxing as Chicago ’s native son, Cestus
Management Fighter Donovan George, scored another
jaw dropping win. “DA BOMB” (19-0-0 w/17 Kos )
completely dominated and destroyed Phil “The Drill”
Williams knocking him out in 2:43 of the 3rd round.
In the 3 rounds that the fight lasted George showed
that he is starting to evolve into a formidable
fighter as his speed, boxing aptitude and shocking
power all came together as he executed the big
punching Williams with brutal efficiency. “DA BOMB’s”
sharp jab, power combination's and balanced footwork
were just too much for “The Drill” to handle.
Gina Iacovou, Cestus
Management’s CEO, said, “This really is a big win
for Don as (Phil) Williams has fought very good
opposition in his career and stopped most of his
opponents. This is the type of performance that let
us know that Donovan is ready to take the next step
in his boxing career.”
Mike Michael, Cestus’ Chief Advisor, said, “ Chicago
fans were thrilled tonight and Williams got drilled
by "DA BOMB". The way he (George) dissected Phil
Williams with his fast jabs and combination's to the
head and body; Williams just didn’t stand a chance!”
Michael continued, “I’m ecstatic about Donovan's
performance tonight as he showed that he belongs at
the world class levels of boxing. So lock the doors
and run for cover because 2010 is is going to be an
explosive year!”.

Manny
Pacquiao could not be the greatest
By
Mortz C. Ortigoza - January 29, 2010
Buyers beware and be cautioned by boxing experts who are not deceived by the Pacquiao versus Joshua Clottey
fight scheduled on March 6 that
Top Rank's Promoter Bob Arum is trying to sell to
the gullible
paying public. Somebody told me Arum said Clottey is an
exciting world
class boxer but I beg to disagree - World class? Probably yes. Exciting? son of a
gun, no!
How could this bum be an exciting pugilist after
what happened in the second half of his Miguel Cotto fight
where Clottey had Cotto on the run but was still tentative
in trying to close the show resulting in him losing the
fight against the already
gassed-out and spent Cotto. Still it would not
surprise me if the 50, 000-seater
Cowboys Stadium in Dallas gets filled up by fans who
would pay to see this low quality match-up put

U.S.
Olympian Sadam “World Kid” Ali Fighting Feb. 6
Publicists PR - Jan. 27, 2010
The road to boxing
stardom for 21-year-old Sadam “World Kid” Ali, a
2008 U.S. Olympian, is being patiently paved and
continues February 6 in Newark, New Jersey.
“I’m a promotional free
agent taking fights one by one,” Ali explained the
route he’s taking. “We’re doing it this way to show
people I’m a boxer worth investing money in. I’ll
probably have a lot of fights before I sign with a
promoter. I’m only 21 and in no rush.”
Ali (4-0, 2 KOs),
fighting out of Brooklyn, was a celebrated U.S.
amateur boxer, starting when he was only nine, who
became the first Arab-American member of the U.S.
Olympic Team, as well as the first New York City
based member of the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team in 20
years. He also was a 3-time PAL National and 2-time
National Golden Gloves champion.
Last year, Sadam turned
pro January 18, stopping Ricky Thompson in the
opening round. He went on to win all four 2009
fights, the last coming Oct. 31 at Mohegan Sun,
which ended in a 4-round decision versus Osvaldo
Rivera.
Ali is matched against
fellow Brooklyn welterweight Jason Thompson (4-0, 2
KOs) in a 4-round bout on the Feb. 6 “Heavy
Artillery” card, headlined by Tomasz Adamek and
Jason Estrada, at the Prudential Center in Newark.

Alexander
vs Urango Unification Fight
Promoter PR: January 29, 2010
Two world champions
from one of the most active and exciting weight
divisions in boxing will meet in a unification bout
on March 6 when undefeated World Boxing Council
super lightweight champion Devon Alexander “The
Great” faces International Boxing Federation junior
welterweight champion Juan Urango at Mohegan Sun
Arena. (HBO 9:30 p.m. ET/PT)
Tickets priced at $175,
$95, $50 and $35 go on sale Friday, Jan. 29 at 7
p.m. at the Mohegan Sun Box Office and through
Ticketmaster. Ticketmaster customers may log on to
ticketmaster.com; call Ticketmaster's national toll
free Charge By Phone number (800) 745-3000; or visit
any Ticketmaster outlet.
Alexander (19-0, 12
KOs), from St. Louis, won the vacant WBC 140-pound
championship by stopping a former holder of that
crown, Junior “The Hitter” Witter, when they met on
Aug. 1 in Southern California.
Always a hot prospect,
the 22-year-old Alexander successfully emerged from
the shadow of fighting his entire career out of the
Cory Spinks camp by displaying elusive defensive
skills—no doubt picked up from his mentor—while
unloading enough firepower to cause a tough Brit to
quit on his stool.
Urango (22-2-1, 17
KOs), a Colombian native now fighting out of Cooper
City, Fla., also won his first world championship in
his last fight by rising from the canvas to stop
noted knockout artist Randall Bailey on Aug. 28 in
South Florida.
Bailey, long known for
having one of the best right hands in the sport,
sent Urango to the mat in the sixth round. The
Colombian showed great fortitude to survive the
round, then rallied to floor Bailey three times,
leading Bailey’s corner to throw in the towel in the
11th round.
Alexander has been
building his unblemished record since high school.
He served notice that he would soon be a force to be
reckoned when he won a unanimous decision over
former world champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley at
New York’s Madison Square Garden on Jan. 19, 2008.
The 29-year-old
Urango’s two losses came against fighters at the top
of the sport: Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton in 2007 and
Andre Berto—in Urango’s lone foray up to the
147-pound limit—on May 30, 2009.
The event is being promoted by Don King Productions.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. to accommodate a full
undercard, to be announced soon.

Sylvester confident ahead of first title defence
against Lyell
IBF
Middleweight Champion Sebastian Sylvester will be
counting on the ferocious support of his home fans
in Neubrandenburg when he takes on Billy Lyell in
his first title defence on Saturday night. The
American is a late replacement for Pablo Navascues,
who failed a random training drug test. “Preparing
for a new opponent on short notice is no problem for
Sebastian,” said coach Karsten Rower. “We have
watched tapes of Lyell. His style is similar to the
guys we had in sparring. Sebastian will be
well-prepared and he will definitely defend his
title.”
More than 4,500 fans
raised the roof on September 19 when Sylvester
clinched a points victory over Giovanni Lorenzo to
ink King Arthur´s vacant title. Saturday´s clash has
been sold out for weeks. “The backing of my fans
really means a lot to me,” Sylvester said. “They
have supported me when I knocked out Castillejo and
also against Lorenzo. I will put on another great
performance against Lyell. After all, the
Jahnsportforum has really become my living room. I
will make sure Lyell won´t feel too comfortable,
though.”
Lyell, who defeated
John Duddy in April 2009, is convinced he will leave
the country with the belt. “This is the chance I
have been waiting for,”
he said at today´s press conference. “Since my
trainer Jack Loew also coaches Kelly Pavlik, a fight
against him is very unlikely. That is why we have
been thinking about a fight with Sylvester for quite
a while – we know him very well. I am in great shape
since I was due to fight this weekend anyway so I
will make the most of this great chance.”
And Jack
Loew added: “We have been following Sylvester for a
while so we know how he fights. Billy is in great
shape. He is ready to win the title. The fans can
expect a huge surprise on Saturday.”

Iran
“The Blade” Barkley is a five-time world champion
who made his name with a third round knockout win
over Thomas Hearns in Las Vegas in 1988. Before he
fought Hearns, the champion’s trainer Emanuel
Steward knew Barkley had the attitude to be
dangerous. “He’s not that skillful, but he just
don’t give a damn”. Sure enough, battered and on the
brink of defeat, Barkley found the right hand to
drop Hearns on his back. Seconds after regaining his
feet, Hearns was rescued by the referee. Four years
later, Barkley became the only man to defeat Hearns
twice, when he out pointed him over 12 rounds to win
the WBA Light heavyweight title. This victory also
made Barkley a member of an elite group of fighters
who have won world titles in three separate weights.
