Mayhem on the Horizon

Interview by Pattee Mak on April 19, 2012

On April 28, 2012, heavyweight Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell (24-0-1, 18 KOs) from Brandywine, Maryland will be fighting on the undercard of Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson II against Chazz Witherspoon (30-2-0, 22 KOs) of New Jersey at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey. Mitchell started his professional career January 18, 2008, against Mike Miller and won by unanimous decision.   Now a little over 4 years, 25 fights later, he may be fighting his toughest challenge ever.  Lets see what he had to say.

Pattee Mak: Good Morning and thank you for taking the time for this interview.

Mitchell: No problem. Thanks for having me.

Pattee Mak: How did this fight come about between the two of you?

Mitchell: My team thought it was a good fight at this stage of my career.  We were trying to get this fight completed a few months back.  It finally all came together.

Pattee Mak: Was this the first time the two of you were going to meet up?

Mitchell: Yes, this is our first meeting.

Pattee Mak: Without giving it all away, what have you studied about your opponent?Mitchell: He’s a well-rounded fighter.  He can box, he can bang, he has a good jab.  He comes to fight.

Pattee Mak: Witherspoon has a 2″ height advantage on you. Which would mean a reach advantage also. Do you feel this will create a problem for you?

Mitchell: I think I will adapt and adjust to whatever Witherspoon brings to the table.

Pattee Mak: This will be your first 12 round fight. Has your training changed in any way because it’ll be 12 rounds? The last 5 out of 6 fights you fought were 10 rounds going back to October, 2010.

Mitchell: I’m picking up my distance running and I’m going a few extra rounds, but I was doing extra rounds any way.  I’ll be prepared to go the distance.

Pattee Mak: Who is currently training you?

Mitchell: Andre Hunter.

Pattee Mak: To date, you have 1 draw and you haven’t lost a fight. Out of all your 25 fights, which one was the most difficult?

Mitchell: Zach Page, because he was awkward and he kept switching his boxing styles during the fight.

Pattee Mak: You are currently signed with Golden Boy Promotions. How has the experience been working with them?

Mitchell: It has been great.  They are moving me along well.

Pattee Mak: You had a very short amateur career. I believe it was 10 fights. Correct me if I’m incorrect. Looking back are you content with the amount of fights you had or do you wish you had more?

Mitchell: I’m content with the amount of amateur fights I had.  If I couldn’t make the Olympics, I was to content to turn pro.  I have just continued to learn on the job.

Pattee Mak: You are fighting on the undercard of Hopkins/Dawson. Any predictions?

Mitchell: I predict a good fight, with the end result of being victorious.

Pattee Mak: On Boxrec you are ranked in the world 12 out of 1137 in your division. The Klischkos’ being 1

Mitchell: They are well deserved in their rankings. They are consummate professionals inside and outside the ring. Hopefully, one day, I will get my chance to challenge them.

Pattee Mak: Anything you’d like to say to heavyweights in your division?

Mitchell: Not at this time.

Pattee Mak: I’ve noticed you haven’t fought for a title. Is this something you’d like to strive for in the future?

Mitchell: Yes, that’s definitely my goal. I want to fight for a title.

Pattee Mak: When Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell the boxer isn’t in the gym, doing road work or sparring, what do you like to do in your free time?

Mitchell: I like to spend time with my family. I like going to the movies and enjoying leisure time with my wife and two children.

Pattee Mak: What would you like to say to your fans and where can they obtain tickets to your fight?

Mitchell: I appreciate all their support. If they can’t make it down to the fight, definitely tune in to HBO on April 28

Pattee Mak: You are only 29 years old and I wish you the best in this sport. A special thanks to Lorin Chvotkin and Joseph Rabotte for making this interview possible.

Mitchell: Thanks a lot. I appreciate you having me.
