And what a “Good Friday” it was for the winners on this card. Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment Sports (CES BOXING) had another fast pasted, exciting pro boxing card at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Super Bantamweight Shelly “Shelito” Vincent captured the main event when she won a unanimous decision against Christina Ruiz from San Antonio, Texas after 10 rounds to capture the UBF World female super bantamweight title and the vacant IBA world Title. Vincent kept her perfect record and went to 14-0-0 and Ruiz 7-8-3.
Vincent and Ruiz, both in the early rounds had great defense, slipping and avoiding punches by the end of the bout a different story. Vincent being the aggressor and doubling up on her punches and Ruiz not afraid to come forward. By round 4 it was toe to toe action. Both fighters landing square on but Vincent doing enough in the judges’ eyes as a tad bit more. In my eyes Ruiz had fallen into the category as a contender for tuff competition for Vincent. You could hear the roar of the crowd as the bout intensified to final round right before the bell was rung. Judges scored it 98-92; 97-93; 97-93. No knockdowns during this bout.
Other bouts on the card:
Heavyweights: An anticipation from many trainers and fighters to see what heavyweight Jean Pierre Augustin from Lawrence, Massachusetts had since Vinny Paz is now working his corner. Augustin went up against Solomon Maye of New Haven, Connecticut. Round 1 started off extremely slow with few punches thrown. Probably trying to feel each other out. Maye kept looking for the knock out. Augustin keeps falling through the ropes. Some were disappointed on Augustin’s performance and many in press row thought Maye should have won. The final verdict: Judges Clark Sammartino 39-37; Steve Weisfeld and Eddie Scuncio 38-38. No winner, no looser but a Majority Draw.
Super Middleweights: Angel Camacho, Jr. of Providence, Rhode Island vs. Chris Chatman of Jersey City, New Jersey. Both fighters coming forward and exchanging punches and taking a ton of punches. By round 6 the fight was getting sloppy. Camacho’s face is as red as a fire truck. By the end of the round both fighters are getting tired. Judges scored the bout 58-56; 60-54 and 59-55 all for Camacho by UD. Camacho keeps his perfect record of 14-0 and Chatman goes the other way 12-5-1.
Super Welterweights: Nick “Nice” DeLomba vs. “Jabbin” Joe Wilson, Jr. Round 2 DeLomba drops Wilson to the canvas. Round 3 (A lot of holding) Wilson is getting tired. DeLomba backed up Wilson against the middle of the ropes, Wilson drops to almost falling thru the ropes. Referee Smoger comes in and gives Wilson the count. The bout continues and Wilson gets backed up again against the ropes, while DeLomba engages on Wilson. Wilson’s corner tossed in the towel. Winner by TKO Delomba. Delomba advances to 7-0 and Wilson 3-2.
Middleweight: Khiary Gray-Pitts vs. Greg McCoy. It only took Gray-Pitts 40 seconds into round 1 to get the TKO victory. Gray-Pitts lands a left hook beautifully on McCoy, McCoy fell forward and stopped himself from falling to the canvas. Gray-Pitts proceeds to chase after McCoy where referee Joey Lupino jumps in between them to call a halt to the bout. The crowd goes wild. Gray-Pitts wins by TKO and increases to 6-0, 4Kos and McCoy 3-5-1. McCoy thought the referee stopped in too soon.
Junior Welterweights: Briam Granado of New Bedford, Mass. vs. Freddy Sanchez out of Worcester, Massachusetts. Granado’s body was beautifully sculpted as a body builder. During round 2 Granado’s left eye was a bloody mess. During round 3 Granado was taking too many punches and decided to quit at 1 minute 15 seconds into the round. Sanchez increases to 4-0 and Granado 1-1.
Light Middleweights: Local favorite Ray Oliveira, Jr. son of “Sucra” Ray Oliveira keeps his winning record in place at 4-0-0 against Luis “The Rock Star” Felix. Not too much action rounds 1 and 2. Both fighters need to sit on their punches more. Round 4 became a big slug fest. Oliveira increases to 4-0 and Felix 0-5.
