• 1924: Harry Greb W 6 Jimmy Slattery, Buffalo. Non-title fight. According to the Pittsburgh Post, Slattery took the fight to Greb and unleashed an accurate two-handed attack to clearly win the first two rounds. He drove Harry around the ring as the crowd roared. Greb held Slattery even in the third, and handed him a severe thrashing in the last three rounds. Jimmy was tired, but kept trying. Greb looked very good as the fight went along.

• Mike Belloise KO 9 Dave Crowley, NYC. Wins New York World Featherweight Title.
• 1940: Jimmy Bivins W 10 Charley Burley, Pittsburgh. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Bivins won seven rounds and Burley three.
• 1943: Holman Williams W 10 Lloyd Marshall, New Orleans. According to reporter Pete Baird, in the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Williams fought strictly on the defense and “this correspondent thought Marshall should have had the verdict by plenty.” The first round was slow. Marshall cornered Williams in the second and “began cracking him with terrific left hooks to the body. In the third round Marshall looked like a sure kayo winner as Holman ran for his life.” Marshall slowed up in the next two rounds and the fans booed the slow action. Baird thought that Marshall won most of the remaining rounds. “We will never fight here again” was the comment of Marshall’s manager. “It was terrible. How can you fight a guy who won’t fight?”

• 1912: Johnny Dundee ND 10 Johnny Kilbane, NYC. Although a no-decision bout Kilbane’s title was at risk if he was stopped inside scheduled distance. “Newspaper decision” a draw (New York Times).
• 1916: Freddie Welsh W 20 Charley White, Colorado Springs. Retains World Lightweight Title. Just before the fight got underway, a section of the arena gave way; two people were killed and hundreds more injured. Welsh back-pedaled throughout the bout while White was the aggressor. When the referee gave the decision to Welsh a riot broke out. The fighters, referee, sports writers and others were forced to seek cover under the wood platform.

• 1904: Sam Langford D 15 Joe Walcott, Manchester, NH. Walcott signed to defend his claim as World Welterweight champion in this fight but as weights were never disclosed, doubt remains as to whether this was a true title defense. Another account of the fight (newspaper): “Joe Walcott met his match in a 15-round bout yesterday afternoon in the Massabasic coliseum before a crowd of 1200. His opponent was Sam Langford, who clearly outpointed the champion, and the latter’s aggressiveness in carrying the fight to Langford was all that saved him from taking a decision that would have given him the short end of the purse. Langford took advantage of his longer reach and repeatedly played a tattoo on Walcott’s face and his cleverness on his feet carried him away from (unreadable) a score or more times when Walcott endeavored by sheer brute force to deliver a knockout blow. While Walcott was the aggressor, Langford met his attacks by rights and lefts to the jaw and mouth so effectively as to draw blood in the second round and he kept Walcott bleeding in every round thereafter. In the third round, Langford brought the champion to one knee by a straight away jolt to the jaw, and he went through the entire fifteen rounds without a perceptible scratch on himself. In the opening round honors were even, but thereafter until the seventh round Langford had all the better of the argument. Source: Next day Lowell Sun.

• 1910: Sam Langford W 15 Joe Jeanette, Boston.
• 1917: Harry Greb ND 10 Battling Levinsky, Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Post had Greb winner of the newspaper decision by a wide margin even though Levinsky had a 25-pound weight advantage. Greb won 8 rounds and two were even but it was still a hard battle. Greb was the aggressor throughout. Levinsky looked good but Greb’s superior speed and busy style were too much for him. Not until the sixth round did Greb hurt Levinsky, which he did then with a terrific left hook. In the 8th, Levinsky got his big chance when he hurt Greb badly with a right to the body. Greb ceased attacking and tried to kid Levinsky, who then took the lead and landed some of his cleanest blows of the fight. Greb stopped Levinsky’s attack early in the 9th with a terrific hook. In the 10th he put Levinsky down for a 3-count and had him in serious trouble as the fight ended.

• Sam Langford ND 6 Bill Tate, Benton Harbor, MI. Tate won from Langford “by a shade.” (Bismarck Tribune) The Chicago Tribune concurs.
• Harry Greb ND 6 Chuck Wiggins, Benton Harbor, MI. Reported as a win for Greb by the Chicago Tribune and the Pittsburgh Post. This fight was on the undercard of the Dempsey-Miske heavyweight title fight. According to the Post, Wiggins emulated Johnny Dundee’s leaping attack and did rather well in the first three rounds. Greb then opened up and won handily. Langford, Dempsey and Greb all on the same card. Awesome!!

The Post reported that Miske landed the two hardest blows of the fight, one in the 6th and one in the 9th. “Greb carried the fighting at all stages and dictates the terms upon which they met.” Miske finished well, but Greb’s early attack had tired Billy so that he couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity. Sportswriter Harry Keck of the post gave Greb six rounds, Miske three rounds, and one even. Another Post writer, Florent Gibson, gave Greb five rounds, Miske three, and two even. Graziano was down for a 5-count in the first round, Zale was on the floor at the bell for round two with the count reaching three. A right to the mid-section followed by a left ended the fight. Referee: Ruby Goldstein. Zale had to be propped up and led around the ring carefully as he waved to the crowd after his left-hook KO’d Graziano. He “looked like a man who had been in hand-to-hand combat with a buzzsaw.” (AP) The following January 22, Zale would win the Edward J. Neil Memorial Award for doing the most for boxing in 1946. That trophy was awarded in memory of the Associated Press sports writer and war correspondent killed during the civil war in Spain in 1938.
