On Saturday night, May 17, at the Saarlandhalle in Saarbruecken, Germany, two World Boxing Federation (WBF) World Champions were crowned, on a big show billed as Night of the Champions II, promoted by DOG Event & Boxing Company.
At Super Middleweight, Berlin-based Cameroonian Bernard Donfack won the vacant WBF World title with an excellent performance against Argentinean Javier Alberto Mamani, taking control of the action from round one and landing with hard shots.
Mamani countered well, especially with body-punches, but Donfack would not be denied and in round ten he floored his opponent with a well-timed combination. Mamani beat the count of referee Uwe Lorch, but seconds after they were allowed to box on, Donfack seized the moment and landed a hard left hook to finish the job.
Donfack, who has fought all is professional fights in Europe, is now 20-11-3 (11) since making his debut in 2005. Javier Alberto Mamani drops to 39-15-1 (20).
Moving down from Super Flyweight, where she held the WBF World title, Karlsruhe’s Raja Amasheh became a two-division world champion by defeating Susana Cruz Perez from Mexico by unanimous decision for the vacant WBF Womens World Flyweight crown.
In a tough battle fought at a quick pace, Amasheh landed the cleaner punches, but Perez was the more active of the two. The Mexican had a point deducted in round four for headbutting, but it would not have an effect on the outcome, as the judges scored 96-93, 97-92 and a much too wide 98-92 in favor of Amasheh.
With the victory, Amasheh stays undefeated at 17-0-1 (4), while 24-year-old Susana Cruz Perez from Tlalnepantla is now 15-6 (8), losing her third world championship challenge.
As in September, I once again ran out of gas in the 10th & 11th championship rounds of October & November with this column, but I recovered to complete them and will unleash a few more flurries to close out the 12th and final round.
In the first week of October, Hassan N’Dam won a UD over Curtis Stevens in an eliminator for the right to challenge Jermaine Taylor who defeated aging Sam Soliman to regain the IBF Middleweight title. How Taylor even earned this title shot is another story altogether, but it is all irrelevant as he is now the champion. However he will not have too much time to savor his victory as he has assault and battery charges pending against him and an upcoming court fight that may turn out to be the toughest fight of his life, just when things started to look up for him in boxing, we wish him luck.
