Rosario – Hot Amateur Prospect & Perhaps Future World Champ!

Amateur boxer Luis Saul Rosario Villafane of Cidra, Puerto Rico loves his homeland and if he plays his cards right his name will be the future of boxing.  Luis is only 19 years old but fights like a champion.  He has won his share of medals and currently has over 100 amateur fights.  I was curious to know more about him and what his future holds for him.  Helping me interpret this interview is pro boxer Jose Angel Ortiz.

Pattee Mak:  Good Morning.

Ortiz:  Buenos días.

Villafane: Buenos Dias.

Pattee Mak:  First and foremost how did you get into the sport of boxing?

Ortiz:  Antes que nada cómo entró usted en el deporte de boxeo?

Villafane:  A los Cuando tenia 14 años y medio mi padre me pregunto si quería ir al gimnasio de Boxeo para mantenerme en forma ya que estaba engordando y me había quitado de toda disciplina deportiva. Luego de pensarlo bien en mi casa decidí ir al gimnasio pero no tenia planes de pelear o competir en este deporte. Después de un mes de entrenamiento, mi entrenador de ese momento Edwin Delgado me pregunto si quería ir a pelear y decidí pelear. En mi primer combate hice tremenda pelea y gane por decisión unánime y decidí seguir en este deporte de alto rendimiento que día a día voy creciendo mas y mas.

Ortiz:  When I was 14 and ½ years old my father asked if I wanted to go to the gymnasium of Boxing keep in form since I was putting on weight and he had kept me away from any sports discipline. After I thought about it at my house I decided to go to the gymnasium but I did not have any plans of fighting or competing in this sport. After a month of training, my coach of that time, Edwin Delgado asked me if it wanted to go fight and I decided to fight. In my first fight I had a tremendous fight and won by unanimous decision and decided to continue in this sport of high honor that every day I am growing more and more.

Pattee Mak:  Where are you training and who is your trainer?

Ortiz:   Dónde se entrena usted y quién es su entrenador?

Villafane:  Actualmente mi entrenador es Luis Espada hace aproximadamente dos años.

Actualmente estamos entrenando en el gimnasio Municipal de Cidra, Puerto Rico. Cidra es mi pueblo. En estos momentos mi entrenador es Luis Espada, Padre y entrenador de nuestro campeón y orgullo Cidreño Jose “Sniper” Pedraza (9-0-0 6ko’s) José Pedraza tiene una de las mejores trayectorias aficionadas de Puerto Rico y estubo a nivel mundial reocnocido por la AIBA.

Ortiz:  At present time my coach is Luis Espada for approximately two years. At present we are training in the Municipal Gymnasium of Cidra, Puerto Rico. Cidra is my people.  Luis Espada, he is the father and trainer of our champion and pride of Cidra, Jose “Sniper” Pedraza (9-0-0, 6ko’s).  José Pedraza has one of the best accomplishments in armature boxing of Puerto Rico and at a world-class level.

Pattee Mak: Besides your brother Luis A. Rosario, is there anyone else in your family that is involved in the sport of boxing?

Ortiz:  Además de su hermano Luis A. Rosario, alguien más en su familia que está implicada en el deporte de boxeo?

Villafane:  Recientemente no hay nadie que practique este deporte pero antes mi hermano mayor de parte de Madre practicaba y estuvo en la escuela especializada en deportes “Albergue Olímpico”. También tuve primos que lo practicaban hace mucho tiempo atrás incluso hasta mi padre.

Ortiz:  At the moment there is nobody who practises this sport but earlier my half brother and it was in the school specializing in sports “Albergue Olimpico”.  Also I had cousins in the past who were practicing years ago even my father.

Pattee Mak:  You have fought I believe a total of 115 amateur fights with 85 wins and 30 losses.  Which fight was your toughest?

Ortiz: Usted a hecho creo un total de 115 luchas aficionadas con 85 triunfos y 30 pérdidas. Qué plea fue la más resistente?

Villafane:  He tenido muchas batallas fuertes ahora mismo no te podría decir cual porque han sido tantas. Desde el comienzo, creo que la mayoría de mis combates han sido fuertes. De echo las peleas que he perdido han sido en la raya, por un punto, decisión dividida. Siempre voy hasta el final hasta morir en el ring.

Ortiz:  I have had many hard battles.  Right now I couldn’t tell you which one was the hardest cause I had so many. From the beginning, I believe that the majority of my fights have been tough.  To be honest all the fights that I have lost have been by decision. I always go to the end, even to die in the ring.

Pattee Mak: You mentioned to me that you won the gold medal in the 2012 in the international tournament “The Olympic Cup” and in 2011 you won the silver medal.  Tell me about your overall experience, where it was held, your opponents and your take on the entire event.

Ortiz: Usted me mencionó que usted ganó la medalla de oro en el 2012 en el torneo internacional “la Taza Olímpica” y en 2011 usted ganó la medalla de plata. Dígame sobre su experiencia total, sus opositores y donde tomaron acontecimiento.

Villafane:  En el 2011 fue el año que comencé a participar en torneos de ese nivel. Competí en la “Copa Olímpica 2011” y me enfrente a Alberto Machado que era el num.2 en Puerto Rico y lo vencí ampliamente. Luego tuve un fuerte combate con Félix Verdejo que era el num. 1 en Puerto Rico y perdí pero fue un combate muy fuerte hasta el final. Félix Verdejo subió una categoría (60kg) y actualmente esta en Londres 2012. En el 2012 participe en “La Copa Olímpica 2012” y en mi primer combate gane ya que mi rival Christopher Díaz no se presento al ring (walk over). Mi segundo combate fue con William Encarnación de Republica Dominicana derrotándolo 24-19. William Encarnación participo en el Pre-Olímpico en Brasil y obtuvo la medalla de Bronce y actualmente esta en las Olimpiadas de Londres 2012. En la final del torneo, enfrente a Freddy Ortiz derrotándolo por RSC (Refere Stop the Contest) en el segundo asalto y asi obtuve la medalla de Oro.

Ortiz:  In 2011 it was the year that I started to participate in tournaments of that level. I competed in the “Copa Olimpica 2011” and I fought Alberto Machado who was  number 2 in Puerto Rico and I beat him by a large amount of points.  Then I had a tough fight with Félix Verdejo who was number 1 in Puerto Rico and I lost but it was a very tough fight until the end.  Félix Verdejo went up in weight (60 kg) and actually right now he’s in London at the 2012 Olympics.  In 2012 I participated in the “La Copa Olimpica  2012” and in my first fight I won because my opponent Christopher Díaz never came to the ring (walk over) and my second fight was with William Encarnación of the Dominican Republic who I beat 24-19. William Encarnación participated in the Pre-Olimpico in Brazil and obtained the Bronze medal and is currently at the 2012 Olypmics in London.  At the end of the tournament, I faced Freddy Ortiz.  I beat him by RSC (Referee Stopped the Contest) in the second round and that’s how I got my Gold medal. .

Pattee Mak:  Currently the 2012 Olympics are taking place in London.  Why aren’t you there?

Ortiz:  Actualmente las Olimpiadas 2012 están ocurren en Londres. Por qué uted no esta usted no esta participando?

Villafane:  Es una larga historia. En el torneo de la selección Nacional 2012 en mi tercer combate perdí tan solo por un Punto con Edwin Rodríguez una pelea muy dudosa. Luego iban a hacer unas eliminatorias antes de el Pre- Olímpico pero por razones desconocidas las cancelaron y no me dieron la oportunidad. En estos momentos en Londres no fue nadie en mi categoría (56kg).

Ortiz:  It is a long story.  In the tournament of the National Selection 2012 in my 3^rd fight I lost only by one point against Edwin Rodríguez.  It was a very questionable loss. Then I was going to do some eliminations before the Pre-Olimpico but for an unknown reason they cancelled it and they didn’t give me the opportunity.  At this moment in London nobody went in my weight class (56 kg).

Pattee Mak:  You also competed in another International Tournament, the Jose “Cheo” Aponte Tournament in 2011 and 2012.   Again, tell me your experience, your final outcome and where the tournament was held.

Ortiz:  Uted compito en otro torneo internacional el Jose “Cheo” Aponte 2011 y el 2012.  Otra vez, dígame su experiencia, su resultado final y donde el torneo fue sostenido.

Villafane:  En el Cheo Aponte 2011, mi primer combate fue con José J. Rosario obteniendo la victoria en un combate cómodo. Luego pase a la final automáticamente ya que el Brasileño Robenilson De Jesus no pudo pelear debido a una lección en su mano. En la final nuevamente enfrente a Félix Verdejo perdiendo nuevamente en un fuerte y cerrado combate y asi obtuve la medalla de Plata. En el Cheo Aponte 2012 obtuve la victoria en mi primer combate frente al Dominicano William Encarnación. Esta fue la primera vez que lo enfrente. Mi segundo combate fue frente al Brasileño Robenilson De Jesus. De Jesus un boxeador reconocido mundialmente y tiene su papel en la AIBA. Perdí con Robenilson yo diría un combate demasiado cerrado. Ocupando el tercer lugar con la medalla de Bronce.
Ortiz:  In Cheo Aponte 2011, my first fight was with José J. Rosario.  I got the victory in a comfortable fight. Then I automatically went to the final because the Brazilian Robenilson De Jesus could not fight due to a hand injury.  In the final, I again battled  Félix Verdejo losing again in a very tough and close fight and that is how I won the Silver medal. In Cheo Aponte 2012, I got the victory in my first fight against William Encarnación of the Dominican Republic.  This was the first time that I fought him.  My second fight was against Robenilson De Jesus of Brasil.  Des Jesus is recognized world wide as a boxer and has been accepted in the AIBA.  I lost to Robenilson and I would say in a very close fight.  I ended up in third place with the Bronze medal.

Pattee Mak:  Any other medals that I missed?

Ortiz:  Alguna otra medalla qué perdí?

Villafane:  Al ganar la Copa Olímpica tuve la oportunidad de ir a Venezuela al torneo Internacional “Batalla de Carabobo”. El torneo se extendió del 27 de Junio al 1 de Julio de 2012. Allí tuve que pelear cuatro veces, ganando mis primeros combates ampliamente. Luego la final de nuevo con el Dominicano y olímpico William Encarnación derrotándolo en una decisión dividida un combate muy fuerte. Puerto Rico se llevo el tercer lugar compitiendo contra diez Paises.

Ortiz:  After I won the Copa Olímpica, I had the opportunity to go to Venezuela to the International Tournament “Battle of Carabobo”. The tournament took place from June 27 until July 1, 2012. There I had to fight four times, wining my first fight by a large margin. Then the final bout I went up against William Encarnación from the Dominican Repbulic and an Olympian.  It was a very close fight and I won by a close decision. Puerto Rico took third place competing against ten Countries.

Pattee Mak:  Besides Puerto Rico and Venezuela, have you fought anywhere else?

Ortiz:  Además de Puerto Rico y Venezuela, ha competido usted en algún otro sitio?

Villafane: Antes de ir a Venezuela tuve la Oportunidad de ir a St. Thomas (USA Virgin Islands) y luego a Trinidad & Tobago.

Ortiz:  Before going to Venezuela, I had the opportunity to go to St. Thomas (USA Virgin Islands) and then to Trinidad and Tobago.

Pattee Mak:  What about any amateur belts

Ortiz: Y algún cinturón aficionado?

Villafane:  En Puerto Rico hay diferentes regiones. En mi región no se compite por Cinturones, en mi Pais es por nivel. Actualmente soy de los primeros dos de Puerto Rico en la categoría de los 56 kg. Solo que no se ha determinado.

Ortiz:  In Puerto Rico there are different regions. In my region one does not compete for belts, in my Country it is by level. Actually I am one of the first two of Puerto Rico in the weight class of 56 kg. Only they have to determine who’s the best.

Pattee Mak:  Whom do you look up to in the sport of boxing?

Ortiz:  Admira usted en el deporte de boxeo?

Villafane: En este deporte respeto a todo boxeador puertorriqueño y del mundo. Uno de ellos es mi amigo y compañero José “Sniper” Pedraza que será nuestro próximo campeón Puertorriqueño. Tambien Admiro mucho a Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao es uno de mis boxeadores favoritos.

Ortiz:  In this sport I respect every Puerto Rican boxer in the world. One of them is my friend and stablemate  José “Sniper” Pedraza who will be our next champion of Puerto Rico. Also I admire Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, he is one of my favorite boxers.Pattee Mak:  I’m only going to mentioned two words “Professional Boxer” …. Why haven’t your turned pro yet?

Ortiz: ¿Por qué no es profesionial todavia.

Villafane:  Como había dicho antes inicie mi carrera de boxeador aficionado a los catorce años. Creo que todavía me queda por desarrollarme en el boxeo aficionado. También me encantaría ir a un mundial con el nombre de mi País en la camisa y levantar mi bandera y traer medallas para Puerto Rico convirtiéndome en un orgullo Boricua! Me gustaría hacer mi ciclo Olímpico.

Ortiz: Like I said before, I started my amateur boxing career at 14 years old I think I still have more to develop in the amateur boxing.  Also I would like to go to world championship of my country with the name of the County on my shirt and carry my flag on my shirt and bring some medals to Puerto Rico.   Making myself a pride of Puerto Rico.  I would like to go make my Olympic cycle.

Pattee Mak:  And what about a ring name.  Do you currently have a ring name?

Ortiz:  ¿Tiene actualmente usted un nombre en el ring?

Villafane:  Desde que comencé en el Boxeo me apodaron “Zurdo” debido a que mi guardia es zurda. Solamente cambiando una letra debido al lenguaje y acento Puertorriqueño. Luis Saul “Zuldo” Rosario.

Ortiz:  Since I began in the Boxing they nicknamed me “Lefty” because of my left hand stance.

Pattee Mak: Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. Is ranked number one in Puerto Rico according to Boxrec.com.  What are your thoughts of him as a fighter?

Ortiz:  Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. es clasificado el número uno en Puerto Rico según Boxrec.com. ¿Qué sus pensamientos de él son como un boxeador?

Villafane:  Para mi Wilfredo Vazques Jr. es un guerrero en el ring. Fuerte, luchador, carácter, dedicación. Además como persona es muy humilde. Es uno de los mejores hoy en dia en el Boxeo en su Categoría ha peleado con lo mejor.

Ortiz:  For me Wilfredo Vazques Jr., is a warrior in the ring. A strong character and dedication. Also as a person he is very humble and is one of the best in the Boxing in his weight class and he has fought the best.
