Interview with Elton “The Real Coolie Bully” Dharry

[October 26, 2011] Professional boxer and current WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation bantamweight champ Elton Dharry of New York will be fighting on December 17, 2011 at the Princess Hotel in Georgetown, Guyana.   I had the opportunity to speak to Dharry recently and this is what the up and coming fighter had to say:

Pattee Mak:    Your last fight was on May 28, 2011 against Dexter Marques where you won the WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation bantamweight title.  Please tell me about this fight in particular Round 7 of 12, right before the referee stopped the bout. What was going through your mind at that time?

Elton Dharry:  Before the fight at the press conference he said he was going to knock me out in the 6^th round and I knew going into the 6^th round he was going to come out hard and try to knock me out but he tired himself out trying to do that. Going into the 7^th round my trainer told me he’s tired go to his body and I did so and I hurt him. I just wanted to finish him off. That was going through my head to just let it all go.  Knocking him out was a big deal because he kept saying he was going to knock me out so I wanted to destroy him.

Pattee Mak:    Will you be defending your WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation bantamweight title on December 17, 2011?

Elton Dharry:  Yes.

Pattee Mak:    Will this fight be in your hometown?

Elton Dharry:  It won’t be in my hometown, but it will be in a City in Guyana.

Pattee Mak:    Do you have a ton of fans that will be supporting you that night?

Elton Dharry:  I always have a lot of fans in Guyana.  For my first fight I had a great crowd and ever since then my fans show up to support me.

Pattee Mak:    Your last fight you were contracted to fight 12 rounds.  Previous to this fight they were all 4 or 6 rounds. Was it difficult for you to go into a contract to fight a 12 round fight when all your other fights were 4 or 6?

Elton Dharry:  Not really.  I always wanted to fight a 10 or 12 but I never was given the opportunity.  The matchmakers or promoters only gave me 4 or 6. Some opponents get tired after the 4^th round and I never got to finish them after the 4^th round because the fight was too short.

Pattee Mak:    How many rounds will your upcoming fight be?

Elton Dharry:  10 round fight.

Pattee Mak:    Is it difficult training for a fight where you don’t know who your opponent will be, especially when it comes to sparring?

Elton Dharry:  It is difficult if you don’t know if the guy is a southpaw or a right-handed fighter especially in sparring.  I don’t know who to spar with. I had a few names they gave to me but they didn’t come up with one of them yet.

Pattee Mak:    At the age of 25 you’ve never been knocked out and I believe you have a long boxing career in front of you. Where do you see yourself in 5 or even 10 years?

Elton Dharry:  5 years from now I want to be a two-division champion and in 5 years I don’t know if it’ll happen but I would want to do it.  Its never been done in my country.  I don’t know what will happen in 10 years.   I know I won’t be president of my country.

Pattee Mak:    Where and who is training you?

Elton Dharry:  I have two trainers, Don Soxby and Martin Gonzalez and I’m currently training at Gleason’s Gym in New York.

Pattee Mak:    Tell me about you as an amateur?

Elton Dharry:  I had a few big tournaments. NY Golden Gloves and NY Metro Finals, US Nationals in 04 and I represented Guyana in the 04 Olympic Box Off.  I lost in the Box off to someone from Puerto Rico.   I started boxing at 16 years old and I turned professional at 19.  I didn’t want to fight amateur so I turned pro. I didn’t want to wear the headgear.  I honestly don’t remember what my record is.

Pattee Mak:    What do you think of other bantamweights in your division?

Elton Dharry:  I feel there are a few guys there and that I can take them. I’m not very impressed.   None to special that I need to worry about.  Nonito Donaire. He’s the top guy in the division.

Pattee Mak:    Whom would you eventually like to fight?

Elton Dharry:  Eventually it doesn’t matter to me. Anyone in the top 5 of my division. It doesn’t matter. I really don’t pick and choose.

Pattee Mak:    The Real Coolie Bully…. ??

Elton Dharry:  Right before my 1^st pro fight I got my name. There are a few fighters in my country with that name in the past.  And my trainer said, “You are the real coolie Bully”. I still don’t know what it means but everyone knows me by that name and not my real name.  I must have gotten that name because I really fought like a bully I guess.

Pattee Mak:    You mentioned to me you had a total of 14 professional fights. Out of the few fights you lost, all of them went the distance. Any comments as to how you felt after the judge’s decision was to your opponent?

Elton Dharry:  I remember one of them.  Tears came out of my eyes because I know I won. When I heard the decisions I can’t explain how I felt cause I know I won. I usually don’t show emotion and I couldn’t explain it. In my heart I know I’m undefeated.   I’m a not what you see on paper, it is not me. Unless you see me in the ring you’ll never really know what type of fighter I am. Some undefeated fighters aren’t good fighters they just looked good on paper.

Pattee Mak:    Who is managing you?

Elton Dharry:  Currently my manager is Anthony.  I don’t have a promoter but I would love to be signed to a promoter.

Pattee Mak:    What would you like to say to all your fans out there?

Elton Dharry:  Every time they see me in the ring I’m gonna give them their moneys worth and I’m gonna take the fight to the top.
