United Boxing Union – Boxing’s Newest Sanctioning Organization

United Boxing Union – Boxing’s Newest Sanctioning Organization

Only a few months back the United Boxing Union (UBU) was born.  The UBU is an international based company with their main office located in Ireland and Co Omagh Tyrone along with an additional office located at the Northampton Rough and Ready Gym in Northampton, England.  They believe only striving for better fights and a cleaner image.  The three individuals at the top of the food chain are Mick Bailey, Joe Gallagher and Col Wood.

The UBU is a bit different than your ordinary boxing organization. They are working alongside Sportechdsc. Sportechdsc is a company that helps disabled persons play sports more closely to able persons standards. Boxing will be opened for disabled persons through sportechdsc.  Sportechdsc came to the UBU to ask for opinions and feed back on such a project. Sportechdsc is talking to involve boxing for the disabled worldwide. To find information concerning Sportechdsc you can find them at www.sportechdsc.co.uk.

UBU’s first professional boxing event is scheduled for October 20, 2011 at the Mellon Country Inn, Omagh Co. Tyrone, United Kingdom.  This exciting bout card includes Ali “Insane” MacLean who will be fighting for the vacant UBU middleweight title and the professional debut of Willie “Sandman” Mitchell.  Other fighters on the card will be announced within the coming weeks.

UBU is also planning a second professional boxing event to be held in London sometime later this year.  The card will include Hector Camacho, Jr. (53-4-1), Bobby Gunn (21-4-1) and Ali “Insane” MacLean. I had a chance to interview Col Wood and Mick Bailey concerning their newest undertaking:

Pattee Mak: Hello and I just wanted to congrats to the both of you on your newest endeavor. Starting up a business is tough, scary and exciting at the same time.  How did the UBU come about?

Col Wood: The story is that as I wanted to open the sports world with the disabled, that I had met Joe Gallagher and Mick Bailey through good fortune.  What it was and means is that UBU has three men who love what they do and have the same passion to try to make things better .

Pattee Mak: How does one form a boxing union/organization?

Mick Bailey: If I was to give out UBU secrets then everyone would be doing what we are going to achieve.

Pattee Mak: LOL. OK you can tell me when we meet in person, face to face.

Pattee Mak: I believe this will be your first boxing event in Tyrone. How did you handpick the fighters that will be fighting for a vacant belt?

Mick Bailey: Fighters was vetted on skill, the ability to box, as we only want those professionally minded.

Pattee Mak:  The UBU currently has 9 belts. Can you describe what each belt looks like and the title divisions of each belts?

Mick Bailey: We have two styles of belts, one for international fights and another to which is for the UBU world titles.  In regards to designs and how the belt looks is under wraps for our first title fight to which is in December.  More news on that to come later.

Pattee Mak:  Let’s name some names.  Who’s your prizefighter right now?

Col Wood: In regards to this question, all I can say is that people will have to come and see for themselves.  When I say that UBU has a major potential for great boxing vision.

Pattee Mak:  How long have the three of you been in the sport of boxing?

Col Wood: Not long at all.  I’m a virgin and have a great respect and love for Boxing as a whole, what I don’t know I’m learning and pretty fast.  Joe Gallagher, has been a part of boxing for many years as a professional boxer and a professional coach.

Mick Bailey: I myself have been around boxing since a child, could say I was born in the ring.  My history is from booth boxing as my grandfather owned boxing booths around London and my love of boxing is from there. I am a former boxer who turned to bare knuckle fighting to which I became UK heavyweight bare knuckle champion. I am also a professional coach.

Pattee Mak: For those who don’t know, what is booth boxing?

Mick Bailey: Showman, fun fares, live entertainment.

Pattee Mak:  If a professional boxer wanted to get on your card whom should they contact?

Col Wood: All Boxers who wish to speak with UBU can find details through Facebook UBU/United Boxing Union/UBU or at www.sportechdsc.co.uk and either myself, Joe or Mick bailey are always available.

Pattee Mak:  Can you give me some insight concerning the misguided information that was brought to your attention about boxing licenses?

Col Wood: Chinese whispers do travel around and can safely say that all laws and licenses are legal within the organization of UBU, if we say that a boxer’s future comes first then safety is always first with UBU.

Pattee Mak:  Is it tough keeping track of the different laws in different countries?

Col Wood: Not really as a world organization for boxing the rules of UBU will be followed to a strict guideline.  If broken, then those who have broken the Laws of UBU or of their country, then will be dealt with accordingly and by the laws of their lands or UBU.

Pattee Mak:  Back in March, 2011, I actually had a chance to witness my first wheelchair boxing match in Connecticut, United States.  Ian Cannon* who has cerebral palsy spastic quadriplegia went up against amateur boxer Luis Reynoso.  Will UBU bouts be between two individuals with the same disability?

Col Wood: On a personal level what Ian Cannon is doing is great not only for Boxing but for communities to understand better that of a disabled person wishing to train in any sport they wish to choose.  Sportechdsc is a better company to ask about such events as they will be working along side MwM to hold events.  UBU is merely here to help guide them with better ethics for that what sportechdsc is doing to change lives.

Pattee Mak:  Has anyone come forward and approached you in a negative way concerning having athletics with a disability fight on your cards?

Mick Bailey: Sportechdsc is a company to which is working with MwM Management to which is apart of UBU.  If results come back with a positive feedback then at a later date you never know. But the feed back for sportechdsc on the matter of concerns then no as it’s all been good opinions.

Pattee Mak:  Are you looking for sponsors for your events? And if so whom should they contact?

Col Wood: In regards to anyone wishing to sponsor or invest in the UBU, then please contact either myself, Joe Gallagher or Mick bailey.

Pattee Mak: Is there anything you would like to add or tell the public out there?

Col Wood: UBU and well do the rest.

For Tickets to UBU’s first event you can purchase them now by calling tel Joe: 078 959 61247, Mick: 075 848 96175 or Col: 07853280947.  All bouts and fighters are subject to change.

  1. My hair is naturally wavy, but it tends to curl every time it.
The crop hairstyle has been popular since the 1920.
As an alternative of basic colored hair, it would seem
that 2012 is the 12 months of hues.

  2. ceiling you would need a 6″ extended down rod to obtain the desired clearance from the floor. The Prestige Meadow houses a lantern style glass light fixture. Quite a few people today have at least a single ceiling enthusiast in their home and some use them as their principal strategy of temperature handle.
