NO KIND WORDS FROM CUJO ON HIS UPCOMING FIGHT WITH FITZPATRICK!!!
On July 16, 2011 super middleweight Scott “Cujo” Sigmon from Forest, Virginia will be meeting up against Chris “The Irish Ghost” Fitzpatrick (13-0-0, 5 KOs) from Columbia, South Carolina at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center, Greensboro, North Carolina. This 10 round professional boxing event is being presented by Walter Johnson Promotions. I recently had a chance to interview his opponent, Chris Fitzpatrick and now I’ve been given the opportunity to speak with Sigmon to hear his thoughts about his upcoming match and other happenings in and out of the ring.
Pattee: HELLO Cujo! As you know one of the questions I presented to Fitzpatrick during his interview was what he knew about you. Fitzpatrick’s response was “Well Scott is a tough fighter and he has a big mouth”. Any comments?
SIGMON: Well I just speak the truth. Him saying I have a big mouth is an opinion not a fact. I’m the first guy he’s been in the ring with with a pulse. I’m definitely the toughest guy he’s been in the ring with. He has been in with two guys with winning records. One of which is Richard Gibson who at the time was 4 and 1 and he had been in with lesser competition. The other was with Bruce Rumbolz who at the time was 22-21 and 38 years old and was a shot fighter. You can tell by watching him. Well there was also Anthony Pietrantonio but that fight didn’t count because Fitzpatrick tested positive for marijuana. What a class act.
Pattee: When I asked Fitzpatrick what did he think the outcome would be in this 10 round fight and if he thought it’ll go the distance or maybe a knock out early. He answered, “I’m looking to break him down and just win the fight big. If the knock out comes then it comes, but I never look for it cuz that is how you start loosing by points”. How do you perceive it?
SIGMON: First of all what has he done in his delusional fantasy world that makes him think he can break me down in the course of 10 rounds!!?? He has been past six 6 rounds only once. I’ve been 8 rounds or more five times. It’s easy to think you have the stamina for a long fight when the guys you fight are barely throwing back. My prediction will be up to Chris and the way the fight unfolds. More than likely he’s probably gonna come out and try and back me up. If that is the case, I’ll probably stop him early in round 4 or 5. The only chance he has not to get knocked out is to try and box me in that case I’m gonna torture and humiliate him.
Pattee: What do you know about Fitzpatrick?
SIGMON: I know that he has 2 children under the age 6 on his facebook page. I don’t know whose children they are but in a particular picture he’s flipping the bird. He has tested positive for marijuana. I also know that he fought for the USNBC title and didn’t pay the sanctioning fees and still acts like he is the champion. Also he acts like some type of prospect, however, his opponents combined record 49 wins and 89 losses. Chris Fitzpatrick is classless. He’s a liar and an embarrassment to the sport of boxing and I feel the worse for his family and friends who believe in their hearts that he can fight. I chose Chris Fitzpatrick to fight, he didn’t choose me. Chris is kinda like a cake, it smells great in the oven and when you pull it out it looks so great with icing on it and all decorated but you bite into it and realize there is no sugar. He can’t punch. He’s got no power. No speed. No chin. No chance!
Pattee: Who is training you?
SIGMON: I’m self-trained.
Pattee: What is a typical day of training like?
SIGMON: Without giving all my secrets away, I have a scientific approach to my training. Each day I work a different energy system. My warm up for one day of training is more intense an entire week of training for Chris. 3.5 hours of the day I train.
Pattee: Do you currently have a manager?
SIGMON: I’m self-managed. I also have a great public relations guy too…. myself.
Pattee: You are only 24 years old and you have been fighting nonstop since your first match against Abdul Gillard on May 9, 2008. Do you want to continue at this pace?
SIGMON: I was supposed to go at a much more rapid pace but my first promoter and I moved a bit slower in my career than I liked. I wanted thirty fights at this point but our pace was a bit slower. This is my fourth fight this year but it’s suppose to be my sixth fight. February 25, 2011, I was supposed to fight Miguel Hernandez of the contender but he came in 26 pounds overweight. I was supposed to fight sometime in May of this year against Adrian Redmond. He showed up to the weigh in but not to the fight.
Pattee: Your records show an impressive 16 wins and only 2 losses. What happened with the 2 losses against Farah Ennis and Jessie Nicklow?
SIGMON: Farah, he was a great prospect. It was a 4 rounder. I was unprepared. I didn’t really train for it. I believe he captured the NABF super middleweight title. He is now rated by boxrec below me. Nicklow, he’s a great fighter. Him and I have become very good friends since the fight. I was the one who called him to fight and it was very refreshing he did not make excuses but instead jumped at the challenge to fight. We both thought we won the fight but the judges scored it for him.
Pattee: Did you learn anything from those 2 fights?
SIGMON: Yes. After the fight with Farah I learned I would have to start with the techniques of boxing instead of relying on my strength of wearing people down. When I say rely on my strength, I mean my ability to take punishment and keep the pressure up. The second fight with Jessie I learned that certain athletic commissions such as Maryland are more political than fair or it could just be ignorance.
Pattee: How did you get the ring name “Cujo”?
SIGMON: While I was an amateur they would call me “Crazy Scott”. I sparred two pros. I sparred with them until they couldn’t hit me any more. While I was covered in my own blood, some guy walked in the gym right before I was ready to leave and I was like get you’re a** in the ring cause I’m gonna knock you out. At that point they started calling me “CUJO”
In a Stephen King book called “CUJO”, there was a St. Bernard dog that got bitten by a rapid bat that went on a killing spree that attacked and killed many individuals. This book inspired in some circles the use of the name “CUJO” as a slang term for smaller dogs in dogfights that would take on much larger opponents.
Pattee: What did you think of the Haye vs. Klitschko fight?
SIGMON: I think people are being overly critical of David Haye. I think that their expectations were so high because they thought that Klitschko could lose. But it probably was the most action for a heavyweight fight in over a decade. And Klitschko actually lost some rounds in a fight for the first time in half a decade.
Pattee: Are you currently training/teaching anyone to box?
SIGMON: Yes. A 12 and 16 year old, those are my prized prospects.
Pattee: Did you ever have anyone in your family that boxed?
SIGMON: No.
Pattee: Why did you get into the sport of boxing?
SIGMON: Some kids dream of playing in the NFL, some kids dream of being president of the United States. I always dreamed of being a superhero like Superman, Spiderman or Batman. I admired the way they inspired people all around them. One day I was watching tv. There was a man running down the road and behind him there were about 200 people running after him just to be in his presence. I realized at that point that there was such a thing as a real life superhero. I later learned that this man was Muhammed Ali. There are some people that will debate if he was the greatest athlete ever, some even if he was the best boxer ever but there are very few that will ever debate that he was the greatest person ever.
Pattee: After this fight is there any particular belt you are looking at or someone you are looking to square off against?
SIGMON: I don’t want any belts because they take your money through royalties and sanctioning fees. There can’t be twenty-five to thirty guys in every weight division who has a belt. That is what is killing the sport of boxing. I would like to fight in no particular order: Edwin Rodriguez (18-0) who is with Lou DiBella, Daniel Jacobs (22-1) he’s with Golden Boy, Brian Cohen (15-2) from Philadelphia, Patrick Majewski (17-0) with Global Boxing and David Medina (23-2) with Zeferino Entertainment.
Pattee: If a male or female wanted to get into the sport of boxing what would you tell them?
SIGMON: I would tell them it’s the greatest teaching tool there is. Success automatically registers as you are hitting something with your fist and the sensation of failure automatically registers as pain. It teaches you self-discipline and self worth. It’s a great cardio vascular workout. It’s great for mental discipline. It gives some people hope for a better future. It gives people a literal fighting chance.
Pattee: What do you think about other boxers in your weight class?
SIGMON: I would like to fight boxers from middleweight to light heavy. My home is super middle but I will meet those smaller and larger in the middle. The best I believe in the middleweight division is Sergio Martinez. The best super middleweight I don’t think its Andre Ward. He is the best in the business aspect. The best fighter is a tie between Carl Froch and Lucian Bute. The best light heavy is Bernard Hopkins. He is a beast but I don’t need to tell anyone that.
Pattee: Your fans will be cheering you on during the fight. What should they expect from you that night?
SIGMON: Because I have sold over $20,000.00 worth of tickets I will have a large contingency on hand which will create a great atmosphere. They should expect an amazing sport spectacle, great showmanship and there will be great substance as well as with a great fight if my opponent will adhere to such a fight.
Along with Sigmon there are other fighters on the same card, which include Lamar Russ vs. George Rivera, Joey Hernandez vs. Robert Kamya, Elijah McCall, James Winchester vs. Kevin Carver, Travis White vs. Kevin Oliveria, Cristian Dominguez vs. John Willoughby and DeQuan Morgan vs. David Cook. All bouts and fighters are subject to change. For tickets contact 800-745-3000. If you cannot make this event you can also purchase it live on www.GFLTV.com.
