Former English light welterweight titlist Scott Haywood makes his return to the ring on the undercard of the Chris Edwards vs. Ahmed Usman British flyweight title clash on Friday, May 29 in Stoke, England. Haywood, 19-3 (4), was last seen in the squared circle at Barnsley Metrodome in February during an unsuccessful bid to unseat world rated Commonwealth king Ajose Olusegun. The lanky 6 footer saw a seven bout win streak snapped against Olusegun and will now look to get back on the horse in a six rounder at Stoke's Fenton Manor Sports Complex. Facing Haywood in the opposite corner will be former amateur standout Michael Frontin, originally from Mauritius, who now makes London his home. Frontin, 1-5-1 (0), is far better than his record indicates as he's been thrown in with the likes of seasoned veterans Oluseguin and Scott Lawton as well as hot prospects such as Nicki Smedley and Ben Murphy. Combined, Frontin's opponents brought a cumulative record of 82-13 into their contests with the 31 year old African native. Frontin, who holds a victory over Murphy and held Ryan Barrett to a draw, will be looking to spoil the return of Haywood, who must win this contest of he is to have a prayer of recapturing his former standing as one of Britain's top light welters. Saturday’s show (May 9) in Shumenov’s hometown of Chimkent, Kazakhstan, presented by the Shumenov brothers (Beibut and Chingis) was taped live for airings (schedule soon to be announced) in North America and Internationally. 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian Shumenov (8-0, 6 KOs), 2008 WBC Asian Boxing Council Organization’s Boxer of the Year, has been procuring title belts at an alarming rate during his relatively young pro career. Already rated No. 8 by the WBA, No. 9 by the WBO and No. 16 by the WBC, he added the IBA World championship to his growing collection, also retaining his WBO Asia Pacific, WBC Asian Boxing Council and PABA Interim titles with his dominant display of speed and strength against NABA USA light heavyweight champion Mitchell (27-5-1, 20 KOs). Lindsay, who is managed by John Rooney Jnr. of Gleason’s Gym in London and sponsored by P.U.G. Athletic, is clearly pleased to be home and has nothing but praise for his Canadian former hosts when he said. "They put on brilliant shows out in Canada, gave me some tough learning fights and also delivered me my first title (winning the IBF Youth Featherweight title against Uriel Barrera in October ‘07). They picked hard opponents and I thrived on it. As much as I enjoyed my time out there (in Canada), I was always hoping to come back and fight in Ireland and England. Nobody from home really got to see me fight out in Canada. Fighting in front of my home crowd will give me a lot more profile and will actually allow people to see what I can do. In any fight, especially at this level, you’re going to have have to dig deep and pull it out. The home crowd does help to bring that out of you a wee bit. It gives you a little bit extra. If things start going pear-shaped you can always rely on the crowd for that extra boost.” Don’t forget to put a note in your diary as you will not want to miss this, 25th April ‘09 at the Ulster Hall in Belfast, because the long awaited clash between the two most exciting and unbeaten young prospects is finally on and is surely destined to be one of the highlights of an already excellent domestic boxing season. Martin Lindsay’s British title fight against Paul Appleby takes place at the Ulster hall, Belfast on 25th April. Tickets priced at £35, £50 and £70 can be purchased directly by calling 02890 334455

MIRANDA PROMISES TO TURN WARD’S DREAM INTO A NIGHTMARE ON MAY 16TH HOLLYWOOD, FL, April 17 – No stranger to traveling to his opponent’s backyards, Edison Miranda had no problem with taking a fight with Andre Ward on May 16th that will be held at the Oracle Arena in Ward’s hometown of Oakland, California. In fact, “Pantera” welcomed the opportunity. “Knocking Ward out in front of his hometown fans will leave no questions from anyone,” said Miranda. “He can’t blame the water, can’t blame the judges, can’t blame the fans, because everything will be in his favor on May 16th. Tampa, Florida – After being
notified that the highly regarded Anthony Peterson pulled
out of their February 21 fight with an injury, Edner Cherry
was left a disappointed and dejected fighter. Hungry to stop
the unbeaten Peterson and at the peak of his training camp,
Cherry was forced to go back to the drawing board. “It was a big let down because
I trained so hard for the fight”, said Cherry, who dropped a
decision to unified Junior Welterweight champion Timothy
Bradley in September. “These type of opportunities don’t
come very often and it is unfortunate that the fight didn’t
go through.” Without an offer to reschedule
the fight with Peterson and few top Lightweights willing to
step into the ring with the rugged Bahamian, Cherry was
temporarily left on hold. This was until Top Rank recently
inquired with Starfight Productions about his availability
for a potential July fight newly crowned WBC Lightweight
champion Edwin Valero. Arguably the biggest puncher in the
sport and a feared fighter, the dynamite fisted Valero
boasts a sensational record of 25-0 with all knockouts. While Valero is an intimidating
opponent who has proven time and time again he can end a
fight with one punch, Cherry is not one to back down. Having
fought nine world champions and title contenders, Cherry
knows he has the experience to push Valero to the limit on
fight night if he officially receives the offer that he
badly craves. “Valero would be a huge fight
because he is among best in the Lightweight division”, said
Cherry who is rated #8 by the WBC. “I am deserving of the
opportunity and don’t think many fighters would present him
with a better challenge. Our styles are perfect for each
other and would make for a great fight without question.” Known for being in peak
physical condition throughout his 32 fight pro career,
Cherry will undoubtedly be fully prepared for the fight of
his life this July if given the opportunity. “I spend a ton of time in the gym and haven’t stopped training since January”, said the former world title challenger. “I am hoping Valero will be my next opponent. It would be a dream come true.” VIC DARCHINYAN CHALLENGES IBF BANTAMWEIGHT TITLIST JOSEPH AGBEKO JULY 11 LIVE ON SHOWTIME® NEW YORK (April 13, 2009) – In what will be a brutal battle of pure power punchers, Vic “Raging Bull’’ Darchinyan will attempt to become a world champion in a third weight class when he challenges International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight champion Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko on Saturday, July 11, live on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast). The event is being co-promoted by Don King Productions and Gary Shaw Productions, LLC. Agbeko (26-1,22 KOs), of New York by way of Ghana, will be making the second defense of the 118-pound crown he won with a seventh-round TKO over Luis Perez in August 2007. A winner of five in a row, Agbeko is coming off a 12-round decision over William Gonzalez on Dec, 11, 2008. Darchinyan (32-1, 26 KOs ) solidified his status as the No. 1 super flyweight in the world – and one of the top boxers pound-for-pound – with back-to-back impressive victories over Jorge Arce last Feb. 7 on SHOWTIME and Christian Mijares on Nov. 1, 2008, on SHOWTIME. An Australia-based Armenian, Darchinyan exited his signature victory over Mijares with the IBF, World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) 115-pound belts. A former IBF flyweight champion, Darchinyan is appearing on SHOWTIME for a ninth time. Agbeko, a relentless, aggressive-minded slugger, will be making his third start in the United States and second on SHOWTIME. His nickname is not really a nickname. “My name is Joseph King Kong Agbeko. That’s my real name,” he said. “It’s on my birth certificate and my passport.’’ By any name, this figures to be a dangerous assignment for Darchinyan, who’s talked about moving up in weight for a long time. “I’ll be ready and I’ll be stronger at 118,” he said. “Agbeko will feel my power, I promise you.” SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING announcers Gus Johnson and Al Bernstein will call the action with Jim Gray reporting from ringside. The executive producer of SHOWTIME Sports is David Dinkins Jr., with Bob Dunphy directing. Ortigoza PHILIPPINES -- The threat of the Petition of Injunction with TRO, for me, is the primordial reason why boxing great Manny Pacquaio helter-skelter cowered back to the folds of his boxing franchiser Solar Sports and T.V program partner GMA-7 here in the Philippines. Even though the Pacman has signed a new contract with the bigger ABS-CBN network –in patent violation of his contract with Solar Sports to air all his boxing matches up to May 6, 2011 – either Solar and GMA TV Networks (despite GMA weak contractual arguments) can still spoil the May 2, 2009 Pacquiao-Hatton match not to be shown at ABS-CBN TV. The wisdom of the TRO or the Writ of Preliminary Injunction is to preserve the rights of either GMA or Solar. The one who would be at the receiving end on this legal stand-off would be the acrimonious Filipino masses who could not watch the fight, and Pacquiao -- who’s.. click here
